Rx For the Most Common Mistake in Medicine The situation is right out of a TV medical drama: Dad's family doctor notices something troubling -- maybe its high blood pressure that won't come down, an odd ache or pain, or maybe Dad needs more care for a chronic condition like asthma or diabetes. The doc recommends a specialist. Cut to the climax: Dad never sees the specialist. So the problem gets worse (cue the dramatic music). The trouble is, this is happening in the real world every day. In fact, in a new study of people over age 65, researchers found that half who were referred to specialists -- for everything from chronic pain to vision problems to digestive trouble and beyond -- never got there. Often, appointments were never scheduled because the doctors' offices dropped the ball or the patient didn't make the call. Other times, people skipped appointments. Either way, they missed an important, and maybe even lifesaving, opportunity. Make sure nobody drops the ball the next time you see your doctor by taking a pad and paper and making notes, or bring a friend along to help remember the details. Write down what you need to do to follow up, and do it. Don't let your health suffer because you didn't make a call or waited around to be called.
