Good evening Mountain View family,

We have made it to the end of November and are in the home stretch for the first semester. We have three weeks left before winter break. This is the time for our families to look at grades and upcoming activities and make a push to finish the semester on a high note.  In the past we spent a considerable amount of time talking about grades and the importance of student engagement. As we near the end of the semester, that will be paramount for your child's success. We want our students to be engaged in their learning and make the most of the last few weeks. These weeks will certainly go quickly. Let's finish strong.

Have a great week and enjoy our cooler temperatures.

Hybrid Attendance

If for any reason your student is unable to physically attend school on their "in person" learning day, and instead stays at home and attends classes via Zoom, please notify the attendance office.  The attendance office will adjust the attendance indicators to  acknowledge your student's  remote presence in class.

During this Remote/Hybrid Learning, we are changing our attendance procedure

In Short:

  • If your child is marked present for class, there is nothing to do.
  • If your child is marked absent, and you can verify that s/he did engage with school work, complete and submit the form so we can reflect that in Parent and StudentVue.
  • The form must be completed for each child separately.
  • The form can be re-used, and must be submitted for each day that you wish to correct.

Back to School Updates from Pima County Health Department
The Pima County Health Department and Pima County Superintendent of Schools understand that parents, teachers, staff and students may feel apprehensive about physically returning to school. With this in mind, we created this message to remind everyone of best practices when schools reopen for in-person learning. We invite you to take note of this valuable information. Watch it: English version | Spanish version

Graduation Image
College, Career, Counseling

MVHS Parents & Guardians,

On Thursday, November 19th, MVHS Counselors and Student Support Staff met with all of our freshmen students through their Bio/Bio-Med course, in-person and via Zoom. Students were introduced to the differences between MVHS graduation requirements and In-State University "Sweet 16" entrance requirements, national risk factors that can cause them to be at-risk for on-time graduation, and what they can do to remain on track/get back on track for graduation.

Risk factors for not graduating on-time include:

  • Missing 20 days or being absent 10% of total school days in a year
  • 2 or more mild or serious behavior infractions
  • GPA less than 2.0, and/or 1 or more failures in core classes (failure to accumulate 5 credits freshman year)

Students were asked to digitally complete a letter as part of their required ECAP (Education Career Action Plan) through the "Class of 2024" Google Classroom. This letter indicates if they meet or did not meet any of the risk factors that can contribute to not graduating on-time. We encourage you to speak to your student(s) and ask them if they have completed this assignment and to see if they have identified themselves as having any of the above risk factors. With or without these risk factors, students still have time to make a positive change to their grades and graduation progress before the end of the semester.

If you have any questions or concerns in regards to your student graduation status, please do not hesitate to contact their school counselor at 520-570-4450

High School Athletics Update:

In light of the current COVID-19 infection levels, Pima County superintendents received a communication yesterday from Pima County Administrator Chuck Huckleberry requesting high schools to immediately cease all Fall athletic events at public schools. This includes football practice and games. Earlier today, Dr. Streeter met with the other Pima County superintendents to review and learn more about this request. During this meeting a collective decision was made to honor the request of Pima County Administration. As a result, all remaining MUSD football games and practices will be cancelled.

This was a difficult decision and we recognize it is disappointing to our football student athletes, coaches, and families, especially after a delayed start to the season. We regret the abrupt nature of this decision, but we are proud of the way the members of our high school football programs have adapted and persevered during this season.

As for Winter sports, the AIA has postponed the competition season until January 5, 2021. With current data in hand, we have made a decision to pause practice for Winter sports at this time.  We will continue to evaluate conditions and will make a decision concerning conditioning practices by December 7, 2020.

MVHS Covid-19 Notification

November 30, 2020

Hello,

The health and well-being of our staff and students is a top priority. I would like to take this opportunity to share newly identified health information.

We have five cases of COVID-19 at Mountain View High School:

  • One in a staff member identified on 11/25. Contact tracing was conducted and there were multiple exposures. Exposed individuals have been notified and impacted areas have been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
  • Four in students identified on 11/30. None of the students were on campus while contagious.

We are choosing to send this notification to inform you whenever there is a confirmed positive case in the school in an effort to keep our families and staff informed. Exposure is defined as being within six feet of the sick person for more than 15 minutes while the person was infectious beginning 48 hours prior to symptom onset or the test date if asymptomatic. Regardless of the outcome of exposures, any individual who was exposed will be asked to quarantine for at least 14 days.

MUSD maintains a COVID-19 Dashboard, which is a live, real-time tracking system of active and resolved cases giving you a snapshot of COVID-19 at MUSD. The Dashboard is refreshed every five minutes, so data will change as it is entered.

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness that is spread through coughing, sneezing, and contact with nasal secretions, mucus or saliva from the mouth or throat of an infected person. Signs and symptoms of COVID-19 may include:

  • Fever, chills
  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Other symptoms: body aches, sore throat, headache, diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, and runny nose

Both children and adults can get COVID-19, and some people are at higher risk for getting seriously ill. For the safety of your family and the community, it is critical for you to take actions to reduce your risk of getting sick with COVID-19.  I would like to remind you it is important to follow all public health recommendations to reduce the risk of illness. These include:

  • Wearing a mask properly at all times
  • Washing your hands frequently with soap and water
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Maintaining social distance when possible

Learn more about MUSD's illness protocol for students who have symptoms consistent with COVID-19, have exposure to or test positive for COVID-19. MUSD staff can find COVID-19 illness protocol here.

MUSD continues to follow the public health safety guidelines set forth by the CDC and the Pima County Health Department. Our schools practice enhanced cleaning and disinfecting, social distancing, hand washing, limiting visitors to campus and the requirement of a face covering. We are taking the necessary steps to protect the health of students and staff, which is our number one priority. Per our established protocol, the impacted areas have been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. You may refer to our District mitigation plan or individual school plans for more detailed guidelines and procedures.

If you have further questions about this notice, please contact Mountain View Health Services at 520.579.4400.

Sincerely,

Todd Garelick

Principal

Mountain Lion Monday

tg

Good evening Mountain Lion family,

Happy Thanksgiving. When 2020 started everyone referenced how we would have greater vision and a better insight on our lives than ever before. When we reflect back on the first eleven months of 2020, I believe we all do so with far different stories of the impact COVID has had onus personally and professionally. We also probably do not feel like our vision was clear, but instead, our vision was blurred by the unpredictability of the virus and how it changed our schools, jobs and families. However, something I am thankful for is that because of the limited things you can do, we have had more family dinners and movie nights than ever before. We were forced to slow down and that really has been a blessing.  I am also thankful to work at a great school with tremendous teachers and a supportive community. We could not have made it through this crisis without the support of everyone and for that, thank you all so very much. Enjoy the holiday and stay well.

MVHS Parents & Guardians,

On Thursday, November 19th, MVHS Counselors and Student Support Staff met with all of our freshmen students through their Bio/Bio-Med course, in-person and via Zoom.
