Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain View families,

Thank you for a great start to 2019. We are incredibly excited about the direction our school is moving and the investment we see each day from our students. We are thrilled to welcome our class of 2024 to our Future Mountain Lions Night this Wednesday at 6:00 pm. This evening event is open to any new student, or returning family, who would like to learn more about our school. We will begin the evening in the auditorium with a brief introduction before transitioning into the New Gym. We have built time into the evening to allow families to walk around, explore their future school, and gain a shared appreciation for our campus.

At this time of the year, our team is busy planning the vision for each department and the course offerings that support our mission. We are proud to offer a student driven master schedule, which places a significant influence of our course schedule on the requests that our student body makes. We are responsive to student preferences and look closely at trends and the need for new courses. This year we are proud to offer several potential new courses including American Sign Language, Football Strength and Conditioning, and Honors Physics 3-4 among others.

In order to support this process, our counseling department has been actively visiting our feeder schools and meeting with our students to assist in course selection. We strongly value the role our families play in helping students choose the academic and elective path that is most appropriate for them as individuals. Please engage with your student about their choices for next year. Their course selection sheets are a great conversation starter and should be signed by their parent or guardian. We strongly encourage dialogue about their interests, their reasons why they are selecting specific courses, and honest conversations about balanced work load. Students will have to Summit classes on February 11th and 12th to have teacher assistance to enter their selections for the upcoming year. At any time during this window you have the opportunity to work with them on their StudentVue account to makes sure that classes were entered correctly. If you have any questions about this process, or questions related to your student, please don't hesitate to contact our administration team or our counseling department. School year 2019-2020 is going to be fantastic.

Have a great week and thank you for supporting our great school.

Eligibility for Free or Reduced-Price School Meals During the Shutdown

Eligibility for Free or Reduced-Price School Meals During the Shutdown MUSD Logo

If you are a family impacted by the federal government shutdown, you may qualify for free or reduced-price school meals. Families can apply for free or reduced-price school meals at any point during the school year. This is a long-standing rule to reflect the many changes in families' economic circumstances that can occur. This practice applies to households with furloughed employees.

To apply for free or reduced-price meals, an adult household member needs to complete a Household Application online (En Espanol - Solicitar Comidas Hoy) OR a paper Household Application to determine eligibility. Paper applications are available at your child's school. One application may be used to list all children in the household.

Theatre Arts 6 Technical S2: IMPROV NIGHT

Hello Parents of Drama Students,

Several students have requested that I send home information about our Improv Night tonight so that parents know it's a legitimate activity on campus.

Drama Club is hosting an evening of Improvisation, with participation from the audience optional (but definitely not required), tonight at 7 p.m. in the Little Theater. Admission is $5 per person. We hope to end as near to 8:30 p.m. as possible. This is a fundraiser for Drama Club to help cover the cost of busses for fieldtrips, awards for Thespian achievements, and festival entry fees.

Improv Night is planned as a family-friendly format and we request that all participants who take the stage keep this in mind.

We hope to see you there!

Thank you,

Ms.Kerstetter

Bio/Bio-Med Intro 2 S2: Biology update week 2

Happy long weekend!! We have been back 2 weeks and things will be pacing up in Biology. Please note that I am putting notes in your Parent and student view on assignments that are 'not in" I am scoring them as a zero until I see something to grade. Please do not simply open the grade book and see "0 missing assignments" as a zero is considered a score. I have time before school, during lunch or after school to help and have students come in to finish work. Right now the students that are not performing well are the same students I consistently see off task: talking, texting on phones, playing games on chrome books. While I do my best to re- direct efforts, with classes of 33+ students it is difficult to police that and attend to questions and lab related activities. Please help at home by checking in on your child's progress and the importance of staying on top of tasks and becoming more self- reliant. If you haven't yet, please get your student some pencils and set reasonable bedtimes even in high school. Staying up until 2am texting or gaming and then getting up at 6:30 does not promote healthy lifestyles or good mental alertness at school.

Thank you for your time and enjoy the long weekend. see you all Tuesday!

English 2: English class update

Good afternoon.  Before students begin their four-day weekend, I thought I would give you an update on the second semester so far.  Prior to reading The Odyssey, students are working on a presentation on Ancient Greece.  It is an in-class partner project, assigned January 11.  This week, students learned how to evaluate on-line resources, and were responsible for providing at least three valid sources in an annotated bibliography.  They also worked on outlines, complete with topic sentences and details about their presentations.  I expect them all to be on track to complete their slide shows, and be ready to present by Friday, January 25.

Those students who are not on task during this assignment will have to make up the work during lunch breaks next week, or attend after school Base Camp.  Like other major assignments, they are given ample time to complete every step during class time. If the work is done according to schedule in class, they have the benefit of my assistance, as well as the chance to collaborate with their peers. Although I naturally make allowances for absences and other circumstances, I cannot dedicate additional class time because of off-task behavior.  There is still so much to cover, and the school year is flying by.

I encourage you to check ParentVUE regularly to make sure your student is completing his or her work in a timely manner.  I resist marking assignments “missing” until I have made several attempts to collect them and we have moved on to the next topic, but if there is no score, there is a good chance I received nothing.

I appreciate your time, and please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  Have a great weekend!

Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain View families,

I hope you had a great first week back and were able to finally catch back up with schedules. It did seem like we had a very long 2 week break but once we returned to school this past week it was as if we never left.

I had mentioned last week we are going to begin a book study this spring with our teachers. The book we are reading is called Grading from the Inside Out by Tom Schimmer. The book can be found on Amazon for $29.32. We are going to offer a book study for interested parents as well and will make sure to share those dates through the Mountain Lion Monday.

The book focusses on many of the issues facing education regarding grades and standards. Through this study we will discuss accuracy in grading, equity in grading as well as what constitutes valid assessments and grading. Our overarching goal from this book study is to provide hope, efficacy and achievement for every student at Mountain View.

This week we will be hosting our AP Night. If you are interested in learning more about our Advanced Placement program please join us for this event. As a district we are very pleased to announce that Marana Unified School District was recognized on the National AP District Honor Roll. Only 5 school districts in Arizona earned this distinction.

We also will be hosting our Future Mountain Lion Night on January 30th. Postcards have been sent out but if you did not receive one and have an incoming Freshman next year let us know. This event will begin at 6 p.m. in the Auditorium.

Have a great week and thank you for supporting our great school.

Bio/Bio-Med Intro 2 S2: Start of Quarter 3

Parents and Students: We have begun quarter 3, and grades start over. I am noting on scores if a student has not turned in a task. Until the item is turned in, it will have a score of 50% value. The items from this week will need to be in by next Thursday for any additional credit beyond a 50 %. They do have ample time in class to complete tasks, but I am seeing a number of students off task, on phones when they should not be, or not focusing on the job they are to do. These behaviors are given redirects, but with class sizes of 32+ individuals, I cannot be policing behaviors and attending to instruction or helping those with questions. Please note that this week's test allows for a retake if the score is 18 or lower. A maximum retake score on a test will be a C-.

I have posted a practice review on their classroom stream. I am always in my room before school, and at lunches for help or additional work time. There is a correlation between work practice/labs completed and in on time and better comprehension of topics. Students that chronically do not turn work in or turn in incomplete work will be assigned to base camp after school to complete the task. We are moving on to DNA next week for several weeks. It is important for students with late/ missing work to get caught up as soon as possible so that they can attend to current classroom activities and not be swimming upstream for too long. Thank you in advance for your home support and individual responsibility.
