What a great year we had at MMS!

This last week was full of many emotions. The students were so excited to be moving on to the next step in their education journey. As you can guess, they were also nervous, sad and uncertain!

We wish our promoting 8th graders all of the best. We have prepared them well for high school and I know they will excell.

Here are some pictures that capture a few of the special moments from the week. Enjoy your summer break!

Our school strives to ensure that parents receive important information in a timely, efficient, and cost-effective manner. This Report Card feature now provides the ability to view and print your child's K-12 grade Report Card/7-12 grade Progress Report instantaneously! This means, timely notification regarding your child's academic progress and no more waiting for the mail. Keeping Our Kids Safe and Healthy

Over the last several months, our school along with other schools nationwide has seen a high level of Juuling among teens.

The Juul is an e-cigarette that doesn't look like a cigarette at all. It actually looks like a flash drive (a cartridge); therefore parents and school staff often don't see them. The Juul is easily concealed and is literally charged in a laptop's USB port.

The Juul has become quite popular among teens because they are discreet (very tiny, sleek, easy to hide even in their palm), easy to use, and is odorless. Teens think these are "safe" because it looks cool and comes in various flavors.

Juuling is not safe and the Juul is certainly not allowed at school. This tiny device contains high nicotine, which is addictive and like vaping can still expose people to cancer-causing chemicals.

Due to the discreetness of Juuling, schools are challenged with identifying and eliminating. As a result, we are reaching out to parents to request your assistance in educating your child about the risks of Juuling as well as reminding your child that there are disciplinary consequences associated with Juul use on campus - "improper use of substance."

Please know that we take Juuling seriously and thank you in advance for your assistance with this.

Youth Volleyball Camp

Mountain View High School will be hosting THE VIEW volleyball camp from July 9th- 12th.

Please see attached flyer for details.

Counseling Corner

Remember, we have counselors to assist students with their social / emotional needs. If you notice that your child seems stressed, angry, or sad, please reach out to our counselors so that we can offer support.

Marana Middle School will provide an experience that fosters life-long academic and personal growth in a world-class education environment. Faculty and staff will collaborate with families, students and the community to develop strong, caring and productive leaders.

End of School Year Info

Good Evening Falcon Families,
I have a few important announcements as we close out the school year.

Chrome Book Collection: We have been collecting Chrome Books over the past few days from students.  We still have quite a few students who have not turned in their devices.  Please note that students who have not turned in their Chrome Book will be unable to complete the registration process for the next school year.  That includes, moving onto 8th grade at MMS, entering the high school, or going to a school out of district where records from MUSD will need to be released.

PARENTS: PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR CHILD TO SEE IF HE OR SHE HAS TURNED IN THEIR CHROME BOOK AND CHARGER.  If they have not, it is imperative that they bring it to school tomorrow.

Thank you for your assistance with this endeavor.

Promotion Ceremonies:  8th grade students should bring nothing with them to school. All family and friends are welcome. No tickets required. Ceremonies are about 45 minutes. There is handicapped parking near our gym. You will also have the ability to sign your child out for the day after promotion. There will be a table by the gym.

9:30 a.m. Wildcat

11:00 a.m. Chili Pepper

12:30 p.m. Scorpion

2:00 p.m. Thunder

Students with a ceremony later in the day are encouraged to bring their promotion clothes with them to school. We will allow students the opportunity to change. Please be mindful of our dress code when preparing for the promotion ceremony. Attire for the promotion ceremony must meet the same guidelines for regular school dress as established by the Marana Middle School Dress Code. It is recommended that students dress up for this event but not formal attire.

Beach balls, silly string, tortillas, air horns, screaming, etc., serve only to disrupt the ceremony and detract from the dignity of the event. Every student deserves a dignified moment of recognition. Students who received their certificates should respect the right of others to do the same.

Please do not arrive more than ½ hour prior to your child's ceremony. We need to allow time for the previous group to leave the parking lot and the gym before we welcome the next group of parents.

After each promotion ceremony, students are encouraged to spend the rest of the day celebrating this educational milestone with their families. Parents will be required to sign their students out at the promotion exit.

I look forward to all of the celebrations tomorrow!

Ms. Dickson - Principal

Physical Education: Good Morning, Falcon Parents...

Grades have been fully updated.  One low score was dropped for each student for whom it would help.  The grades you see now are the end of quarter grades.  If students believe there is an error, they need to communicate this right away.

Next week:

We will not see 8th graders until Thursday.

Monday we will take all 7th graders to the park/pool to leave the gym for 8th grade activities.  Students can swim or play at the park.

Tuesday we see none of our classes; all students are with their teams this day.

Wednesday we will meet 7th graders in the library as promotion will be taking place in the gym.

Thursday is our last day with students.  We will be in the gym this day.

Thank you for your support throughout the past semester...

Amy Corner and Patrick Miller

End of Year Update

Falcon Parents,

We have a few changes to our end of year activities.  We will have our 8th grade fun day on Monday, May 21st.  We initially were planning on a food truck to provide hamburgers to the students.  We will now be serving pizza.  As a result, we are collecting only $9.00 from students instead of $12.

Chrome Book Collection:

Our chromebook collection day is Monday, May 21st for seventh graders and Tuesday, May 22nd for eighth graders.

Please assist your child in accomplishing the following tasks so he or she can avoid fines being placed against his or her account:
1. Removing any stickers that have been placed on the device.
2. Erasing any writing that is on the surface of the chromebook. "Magic erasers" work very well for this.
3. Locating the charger if it is "missing in action."
4. Making sure that he or she brings the chromebook and charger to school on  Monday, May 21st for seventh graders or on Tuesday, May 22nd for eighth graders.

Thank you for your continued support!

We're making these updates as new data protection regulations come into effect in the European Union, and we're taking the opportunity to make improvements for Google users around the world.

Falcon Families.

We are down to just 9 days left in the school year! We have a lot to accomplish and so much to celebrate.  Later in the newsletter, I have included information about our 8th grade fun day celebration and our end of year celebration for 7th grade.

One of the most exciting things that has happened for MMS, is an addition to our administration team! Next year, we will have three Associate Principals who will be supporting teachers, parents and students. This is a great advantage for us as we work with over 1100 students each day. It brings me get pleasure to announce that Mrs. Tawnya Caldwell will be joining our team. Mrs. Caldwell has been a part of the Marana Community for many years and we are thrilled that she is now a Falcon!

Please read the bio below to get to know Mrs. Caldwell even better.

My very best,

Ms. Dickson

New Associate Principal Mrs. Caldwell

Tawnya CaldwellHello Falcon Families,

I am so honored to be the new Associate Principal of Marana Middle School.  I wanted to share a little information about myself before the new school year.

I moved to Tucson in 1993 when I married my high school sweetheart, Dan, and transferred to the UofA because we both loved the Wildcats! We just celebrated our 25th anniversary this past January. I graduated in 1997 with a bachelors in Elementary Education with an early childhood endorsement. I took a teaching job in the Tempe school district after college because we thought we wanted to move home. But then the following year we moved back to Tucson and have been here ever since.

I began teaching at Desert Winds Elementary in the fall of 1998 and did that for 8 years. During that time, I had two children, Zach and Tatum that are now 15 and 18. Zach is now at Pima and Tatum is a freshman at MHS. I then started teaching half time and being an assistant principal half time for two years while I earned my master's degree in Educational Leadership at the UofA. I was then the associate principal at Desert Winds for two years, and then at both DW and Picture Rocks for one year. In 2011, I became the principal of Desert Winds for 5 years and then combined both schools into Picture Rocks Elementary last school year. I have been in MUSD now for the last 20 years.

I am very excited to now be a Falcon and I look forward to meeting you all at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year.

Mrs. Caldwell

Athletics

Hello Falcon Family Athletes,
We are closing out the final week of the 4th quarter sports season with a bang! Both 7th and 8th grade baseball teams finished strong to earn number 1 seeds on the single elimination tournament. We earned home field advantage for both games as long as we win. Our top five expansion volleyball teams will be traveling to Tortolita on Tuesday to compete for a championship as well! Our expansion baseball teams had a fantastic season and even played (and beat ) other schools top teams! We even earned a rematch vs the top two La Cima teams this week! Wednesday and Thursday will be tournaments for our 7th and 8th grade volleyball teams. Our Falcons have made us proud all year long. We have continuously won and lost (mostly won ) with class. Our entire athletic department here at Marana Middle School strives every day to provide a positive experience for all of our athletes. Thank you for being an integral part of our incredibly successful Red and Blue culture!
