Dear MUSD Parent/Guardian:

The Marana Unified School District considers the safety and well-being of students to be our highest priority. We believe it is the right of every student to be educated in a positive, safe, caring, and respectful learning environment, free from bullying and threats of violence, crisis, weapons, fights, and other urgent situations.

We also recognize that we live in a fast-paced, constantly changing world where the use of technology and online communications are prevalent. It is more important than ever that we are proactive and provide trusted and simple tools for students to easily report threats and concerns.

To this end, I am pleased to share that the District has partnered with Gaggle to implement a 24/7 SpeakUp safety tip line where students, parents, and community members can email, call, or text a concern about student safety issues and threats. Call or Text - (520) 518-4181 or Email - speakup@stu.maranausd.org.

In addition to this early-warning safety tip line, Gaggle proactively assists our District 24/7/365 in the prevention of harmful situations by providing real-time monitoring of electronic communications on MUSD school-provided technology. Through these proactive efforts, aligned with our security and internet safety measures, we can receive notifications of signs of self-harm, depression, thoughts of suicide, substance abuse, cyberbullying, and credible threats of violence against others.

It is our belief that this tool is another valuable resource in our ongoing commitment to provide a safe and secure learning environment. Additional information and a video regarding Gaggle SpeakUp safety tip line can be found online at https://www.gaggle.net/resource/speakup-2/.

Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain Lion family,

The temperatures this week will finally feel like Fall. And, with Halloween coming up on Thursday it's nice that kids can wear their costumes and not feel too hot. Or, as I have experienced in other places I have lived, kids can wear their costumes without a jacket over them as well.

Congratulations to the Pride of Mountain View Band on their performance at the University of Arizona Band Day. And, a congratulations to our Cheer program and their awards from their event at Amphitheatre on Saturday. This Friday is Senior Night for Band, Cheer, Sports Medicine and Football. Come join the festivities at Wayne Jones Field. We also will be hosting our Mountain View Meet Yourself event in the service drive prior to the game. In case you missed it, we had a great live performance by Mr. Armstrong's band last Friday – great job Mr. Armstrong!

This Friday we are doing a "Data Dive" with our staff as we reflect on the 1^st quarter. I wanted to share a few of the things that certainly got our attention as we prepared for this week:

Our attendance has gone up from the beginning of the school year – this is significant, we feel, as it is hard to move that needle and we feel that more kids are coming to school because of Hope and Optimism.
Our failure rates are significantly lower when compared to the last two school years. This year we are only assessing students on standards and not compliance. We are producing more valid and accurate grades. The increased passing rates are a positive sign to be sure.
Our overall discipline has decreased. There are a few blips that are moving up, and as we have shared on numerous occasions, these are related to vaping and other similar items. This epidemic is one that we will continue to confront and one that we truly want to help our students and families overcome. This week we will start sharing messages through our Facebook and Twitter regarding these items and the dangers they have created.

Finally, and maybe most importantly, our Grad Night program is in dire need of help. Unfortunately, our Grad Night chair had to step down and we are concerned about losing this great event. This is our call for help. If you can organize, plan and have a heart for this event, PLEASE reach out to Anne Abel at abelfamily7@outlook.com or Angela Chintis at achintis@gmail.com for more information. And, thank you in advance for any and all help.

Things to Know

From the MVHS Front Office,

Teen Maze – information for parents!

On Tuesday, October 29^th, all students in world history classes will be participating in the Teen Maze program. Teen Maze is a drug and alcohol awareness prevention program sponsored by the Marana Prevention Alliance. Students will begin in a staged area as they enter the library. At that point they will be given a passport with will take them to three different scenario/consequence tables in the library. Students will be in small groups, meeting with an adult community member representing their respective agency function – for example – the emergency room, a police officer, a treatment program, seeing a judge or probation officer. We have offered this program the last two years and it was both well-done and well-received by students. If you don't want your student to participate, please contact their work history teacher and an alternate setting will be provided.

Parents and Students,

There will be some new requirements for parking permits and off-campus passes for next year, please see below:

Parking Permits:

To be eligible for a parking permit for the 2019-2020 school year: 1) Meet all parking privilege expectations; 2) Have no more than 10 tardies in your first scheduled class of the day during the 4th quarter.
Students who are not initially eligible for a 2019-2020 parking permit due to tardies, may become eligible by demonstrating on-time behavior during the first quarter of the school year.
Any students who has 10 or more tardies during the during the first quarter, will have their parking permit revoked.

Off-Campus Passes:

To be eligible for an off-campus pass for the 2019-2020 school year: 1) Meet all off-campus pass expectations; 2) Have no more than 10 tardies in periods 2-6 during the 4th quarter.
Students who are not initially eligible for a 2019-2020 off-campus pass due to tardies, may become eligible by demonstrating on-time behavior during the first quarter of the school year.
Any students who has 10 or more tardies during the first quarter, will have their off-campus pass revoked for three-weeks.

All students should have their student ID with them at all times. If your student needs one, they can get one in the Bookstore.

Office Hours for Mountain View are 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM

Students and Parents - The D-wing gate is open in the morning, please pull forward to drop off your student. Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus.

With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors.

Please do not park in the first 10 stops in front of the JTED building. Those are reserved for the preschool. Also, please do not make any U-turns in that area.

Parents:
Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office.
We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office.
Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass.

Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.

A Note from the Attendance Office

When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded.

"STUDENT ABSENCES"

In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444.

"STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS"

Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals.

College, Career, Counseling

MVHS Parents,

On Tuesday, October 22^nd, MVHS Counselors and Student Support Staff met with all of our freshmen students in Bio/Bio-Med. Students were introduced to the differences between MVHS graduation requirements and In-State University "Sweet 16" entrance requirements, national and school specific risk factors that can cause them to be at-risk for on time graduation, and what they can do to remain on track/get back on track for graduation.

Risk factors for not graduating on-time include:

Missing 20 days or being absent 10% of total school days in a year
At MVHS, 10 or more absences (even excused) in any 1 class each semester, puts your student at risk
2 or more mild or serious behavior infractions
GPA less than 2.0, and/or 1 or more failures in core classes (failure to accumulate 5 credits freshman year)

You will receive a letter via USPS, completed by your student(s) that outlines whether or not they have any of the risk factors that can contribute to not graduating on-time. We encourage you to talk to your student, to see if they have identified themselves as having any of the above risk factors. With or without these risk factors, students still have time to make a positive change to their grades and graduation progress before the end of the semester.

Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain View family,

Welcome back to school and the beginning of the second quarter. We hope everyone enjoyed their break and had the opportunity to spend time with family. We are right back at it and excited to continue our mission at Mountain View. We also are excited to work with our teachers and students as we continue to transform our teaching and grading practices on our campus.

When we reflect on the first quarter and the shifts we made at our school we are very encouraged. A quote I saw recently said, "The best view comes after the hardest climb." (author unknown) In so many ways that encapsulates what we desire for our students at Mountain View. The process of learning can be very difficult and the demands on our students have never been greater. Yet, after all of the hard work and dedication to learning, the view is different. The view is better. Another quote, from Dr. Seuss, might say it even better – "Be sure when you step, step with care and great tact. And remember life is a great balancing act. And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed) Kid, you'll move mountains." Simple. Concise. Dr. Seuss at his finest. Our hope is that all of our students will move mountains and will make the hardest climb so they can see the best views.

Again, welcome back. This is a busy quarter and an important eight weeks for all of our students to focus on their work and finish the first semester strong. The next few weeks will move fast and it is important for our students to be engaged in their classes and to take advantage of all of the interventions that we have in place. Our goal is to provide our parents with accurate measurements of learning at the end of the semester. To finish the quote from Dr. Seuss, "Kid, you'll move mountains! You're off to great places. Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So…get on your way!" It is time to continue our journey, together, as our mountain is waiting.
