Dear Parent or Guardian,

At Mountain View High School, we believe in grading practices that support the learning process, encourage student success, and accurately reflect student progress toward learning of the state standards. Students earn grades by demonstrating their learning of the content. Our beliefs about learning and grading practices are grounded in the following statements:

  • All students can learn.
  • Students learn in different ways.
  • Assessment is a process for providing feedback that influences learning.
  • Grades should accurately reflect learning and achievement.

Beginning with the 2019-2020 school year, Mountain View will be aligning school grading practices to match our beliefs and our commitment to providing hope and optimism. This change is based on current research and several years of school-wide professional development, including a book study of Grading From the Inside Out, by Tom Schimmer.

Teachers will implement one of two scales: 0-4 point scale or 50-100 scale. Regardless of which system a teacher uses for their course gradebook, all grades viewed in Synergy will be converted into a percentage system. In alignment with our commitment to hope and optimism, all letter grades will be measured in equal increments. With respect to this, it is important to note that no student will ever receive a grade lower than 50% in Synergy. As with the 10 point measures that move students among the D, C, B and A letter grades, the letter grade of F will carry only a 10 point measure. The implementation of the 0-4 point scale, or 50-100 scale, will not change how honor roll, other weighted classes, or class rank are determined.

We recognize that changes to school grading systems may bring questions or concerns. Beginning this school year, we will host several parent meetings to answer questions and to provide a more in depth explanation of our grading changes. Our first meeting will be:

When: July 31, 2019

Where: Mountain View High School Little Theater

Time: 6:30pm to 7:30pm

Please RSVP tohttps://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F044DAAA823A6F85-rescheduled

More dates will be announced as interest and need arise.

We are excited about these changes and look forward to seeing the positive impact they will have on our students.

Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain Lion family,

Thank you all for your patience and understanding with regards to Mountain Lion Days last week. We ran into the figurative perfect storm on Tuesday and by Wednesday, literally had a storm knock out our ability to get students registered. However, our staff was extremely appreciative of all of you for showing them grace and helping us all get through this together.

This week is a busy week as well on the 40 acres. We have ELEVATE, our 8th grade transition camp, on Monday and Tuesday and our New Student Orientation on Thursday (Please see the attachment for a more detailed explanation and schedule). We will also have our second attempt at hosting our Parent Information Night regarding our grading philosophy and changes. (also knocked out by the storm last week…) The parent meeting will be in the Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

A reminder that the first day of school is August 5th. As in past years, Linda Vista can become quite a traffic jam that day. Please consider carpooling or coming a little earlier than usual to help with the number of cars in the lot on Monday. We do appreciate your help with this and know it is not the most ideal situation but we will continue to work with Pima County on our intersection and the issues associated with it.

Have a great last week of summer and we look forward to seeing you all on Monday.

Students and Parents - The D-wing gate is open in the morning, please pull forward to drop off your student. Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus.

With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors.

Parents:
Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office.
We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office.
Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass.

Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.

A Note from the Attendance Office

When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded.

"STUDENT ABSENCES"

In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444.

"STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS"

Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals.

College, Career, Counseling

Dear Mountain Lion Parents/Guardians and Students,

Welcome back to the start of our 2019-2020 school year! In an effort to streamline the schedule change process, we wanted to send you some information to address common schedule change questions.

Schedule Change Process:

The following schedule changes are high priority. Please make an appointment in the counseling office for August, 2nd to have your schedule corrected (once you have picked up your schedule during Mountain Lion Days).
• Class was completed in summer school
• Missing period (for example, missing a 4th period class 1,2,3,5,6 )
• Missing a core class (English, math, science or social studies)
• Two classes in one period (for example, two classes scheduled in 3rd period)
• Schedule contains a "see counselor" code (xxxcounseling office)

For all other schedule changes, requests will be taken now and during the first week of school. Please fill out the blue schedule change request form. As Mountain Lion Days are now over, you can pick up this form in the Counseling office. This form must be signed by the student and parent/guardian and returned to the counseling office no later than FRIDAY, August 09, 2019.
• Change of mind about an elective
• Level up or level down (move to or from an honors or AP class)
• Add/Drop additional class

Please understand that first semester schedule change requests will be addressed from August 2nd through August 9th, 2019 with the following considerations: priority will be given to requests turned in during Mountain Lion Days, by grade level, and then on a first-come first-served basis. Changes are contingent upon class balance and size, class availability, and administrative approval.

Students who have requested schedule changes:

Counselors are working diligently to get submitted requests for schedule changes processed prior to the start of school.

If you have turned in a "request for schedule change" form, please check your StudentVUE this weekend to see if changes have taken place.

If we were unable to process your request prior to the start of the school year but are able to make the change, we will send your updated schedule to you once school starts.

If we were not able to accommodate your request, you will receive a denial form with the reason(s) why during the first week of school.

Thank You,

Principal's Message

Welcome Back Mountain Lion Family

We trust everyone enjoyed a wonderful summer vacation and are eager to return to school. We are very excited to welcome to Mountain View our Class of 2023. And, we are just as excited to celebrate our senior class, the Class of 2020.

As with most summers on a school campus, there are a lot of projects that take place. In some instances those projects spill into the new school year. Two of these are the New Gym and the stucco work on the J/K building and New Gym. The New Gym floor is being replaced due to flooding from last school year. The stucco work has been two years in planning and finally we will have both buildings looking brand new. However, please pardon our dust along the way.

Our administration is very excited to get this school year started for a number of reasons. Our school goals for 2019-2020 are:

  1. Student Engagement
  2. Interventions
  3. Grading and Assessment

We envision, through our goals, that every student learns and that matches our philosophy as well. Every student at Mountain View can learn and it is our job to make sure that happens. Something you may hear a lot this year is that students may no longer opt-out of learning. As we have heard a few times in the past 12 months, high school students are too young to make a decision – by not working in school – that will negatively impact the rest of their lives. Therefore, we are going to demand that our students are engaged in their lessons and our teachers are committed to making their lessons both meaningful and engaging. We also want to promote optimism in our students. Our new grading philosophy addresses that ideal – we want our students to hold on to an increased level of hope. And, we want validity in what we are grading. Therefore, we need accurate measurements of student knowledge. We will also ensure that our interventions are in place to support students that are struggling in school and need help.

The Marana Unified School District goal for this year centers on Equity. We feel very strongly that the goals that we have and the methods by which we implement our goals will ensure an equitable educational opportunity for every Mountain Lion.

With Hope, Efficacy and Achievement we can create student confidence. As Christopher Columbus said, You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore." With confidence, courage and optimism our students will cross the ocean.
