Secrets of Slender Women

By Michael Roizen, M.D., and Mehmet Oz, M.D.

A plan and some super-sweet, candylike clementines -- or even those giant succulent strawberries with stems -- may be the simple things that help you drop the pounds that seem to be accumulating faster than dust bunnies under the bed.

See, in a recent study that looked at women's attitudes toward food, it turns out that the heaviest women were those who fell into the "impulsive eater" category; they are tempted by advertising and by food they see or smell, and tend to eat out of stress or boredom.

The skinniest? They're the label readers; the ones who are willing to pay more for healthy foods and who think about balancing the foods they eat throughout the day.

Thing is, after years of obeying the call of Mrs. Fields, reading a library's worth of labels isn't going to turn you trim right away. You need an interim strategy. The first thing you need to do is decide what you're going to eat, which should be mostly produce, grains that are 100 percent whole, nuts, healthy fat and some lean protein. And make it sound good enough for company. That means no "grilled fish," but plenty of "pan-seared, black-pepper-crusted tuna." No "steamed veggies," but lots of "roasted vegetables with rosemary." Get it? And that's where the clementines and the strawberries come in. If you're the type to eat what you see, make sure that what you see is only tempting, healthy stuff. In other words, if your impulses guide you, let them guide you to the best foods from the ground.

Today's Word "prink"

prink \PRINGK\ (transitive verb) - To dress up; to deck for show.

(intransitive verb) - To dress or arrange oneself for show; to primp.

"To prink and preen he'd ask no urging,
But spend three hours before the glass,
Till from his dressing-room he'd pass,
Like Venus' very self emerging..." -- Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin, 'Eugene Onegin'

Prink is probably an alteration of prank, from Middle English pranken, "to show off," perhaps from Middle Dutch pronken, "to adorn oneself," and from Middle Low German prunken (from prank, "display").

Broken Engagement

Dear Marty,

I have been unable to sleep since I broke off your engagement to my daughter. Will you forgive and forget?

I was much too sensitive about your Mohawk, tattoo and pierced nose. I now realize motorcycles aren't really that dangerous, and I really should not have reacted that way to the fact that you have never held a job.

I am also very sure that some other very nice people live under the bridge in the park, too. Sure my daughter is only 18 and wants to marry you instead of going to Harvard on full scholarship. After all, you can't learn everything about life from books.

I sometimes forget how backward I can be. I was wrong. I was a fool. I have now come to my senses and you have my full blessing to marry my daughter.

Sincerely, Your future father-in-law.

P.S. Congratulations on winning the lottery!

Tracking the Weather

It was October and the Indians on a remote reservation asked their new Chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was a Chief in a modern society he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky he couldn't tell what the winter was going to be like. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect firewood to be prepared.

But being a practical leader, after several days he got an idea. He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, "Is the coming winter going to be cold?"

It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold the meteorologist at the weather service responded.

So the Chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more firewood in order to be prepared. A week later he called the National Weather Service again. Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter?

Yes, the man at National Weather Service again replied, it's going to be a very cold winter.

The Chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find. Two weeks later the Chief called the National Weather Service again. Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?

Absolutely, the man replied. It's looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters ever.

"How can you be so sure?" the Chief asked.

The weatherman replied, "The Indians are collecting firewood like crazy!"

Driving Lesson

My teenaged niece Elizabeth was nervous as she took the wheel for her first driving lesson. As she was pulling out of the parking lot, the instructor said, "Turn left here, and don't forget to let the people behind you know what you're doing."

Elizabeth turned to the students sitting in the backseat and announced, "I'm going left."

China giving migrant workers condoms

BEIJING (UPI) -- Fearing unsafe sex could lead to venereal diseases and other social problems, Chinese officials say they will keep giving condoms to migrant workers.

Migrant workers often ask for "help" from sex workers during long periods away from their spouses, Xinhua reported Saturday.

"Sexually transmitted diseases are spreading faster among migrant workers, whose sex lives have long been neglected," said Zhang Feng, director of Guangdong provincial commission of population and family planning.

A survey by the Guangdong Sexology Association on the sex habits and health of Guangdong's migrant laborers showed up to 36 percent of married men have experienced severe sexual repression, Xinhua said.

The survey showed 30 percent of married men hire prostitutes for sex and another 30 percent said they have had many sexual partners because of unhappy marriages or separation from their wives.

Last year, the Guangdong commission distributed about 100 million condoms to migrant workers to help promote safe sex and it says it hopes to pass out more in 2010.

Guangdong is China's top economic powerhouse and home to about 30 million migrant workers, the most in the country, Xinhua reported.

Ginkgo: Risk of seizures in epileptics

BONN, Germany (UPI) -- An herbal remedy may raise the risk of seizures in people with epilepsy, German researchers warn.

Eckhard Leistner and Christel Drewke of Institut fur Pharmazeutische Biologie, Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universitat, say the remedy -- pills or teas from the leaves or raw or roasted seeds of Ginkgo biloba used to treat an array of maladies including Alzheimer's disease and blood vessel blockages -- contains potentially toxic ginkgotoxin that may affect a chemical signaling pathway in ways that trigger epileptic seizures.

The researchers reviewed 10 studies and they say there is evidence Ginkgo can interact with anti-seizure medications and reduce their effectiveness.

The researchers urge restrictions be placed on the use of the top-selling remedy.

"It is therefore important that the large number of G. biloba product users and their healthcare providers be made aware of these risks, in order to enable them to make informed decisions about the use of these preparations," the study says.

The review is published in the Journal of Natural Products.

Vitamin D may fight Crohn's disease

MONTREAL (UPI) -- Canadian researchers say vitamin D can counter the effects of Crohn's disease.

Researchers at Montreal's McGill University Health Center and University of Montreal found vitamin D acts directly on the beta defensin 2 gene, which encodes an anti-microbial peptide and the NOD2 gene that alerts cells to the presence of invading microbes.

Both Beta-defensin and NOD2 have been linked to Crohn's disease -- an autoimmune disorder in which a defect in innate immune handling of intestinal bacteria leads to inflammatory bowel disease.

"Our data suggests, for the first time, that vitamin D deficiency can contribute to Crohn's disease," study leader Dr. John White of McGill says in a statement.

White suggests siblings of patients with Crohn's disease who have not as yet developed the disease make sure they are vitamin D sufficient.

"It's something that's easy to do, because they can simply go to a pharmacy and buy vitamin D supplements," he says.

The study findings are published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

Some pained by Obama's root canal remark

CHICAGO (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama's reference to a root canal in his State of the Union address has some dental specialists who do root canals feeling some pain.

In the address, Obama commented that the bank bailout was "about as popular as a root canal."

"If there's one thing that has unified Democrats and Republicans, and everybody in between, it's that we all hated the bank bailout," Obama said. "I hated it. I hated it. You hated it."

The American Association of Endodontists, which represents root canal specialists, said Obama unintentionally reinforced a myth and outdated misconception about the "unpopular" nature of root canal procedures. The group said root canal procedures should not be feared and hopes the president and all Americans become better informed for the sake of their dental and total body health.

"While we certainly understand the president's intent, people need to know that root canals don't cause pain, they relieve it," Dr. Gerald N. Glickman, president of the American Association of Endodontists, said in a statement. "Root canals may sound daunting, but endodontists can do this procedure quickly, efficiently and with virtually no pain involved. The result is a restored natural tooth that can last a lifetime."
