Cultural Museum Project Sophomore English MVHS

Message From: Peter Geske

Dear Parents,

As your child’s sophomore English teachers, we first want to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Since your child will be home for the next few days, we thought it would be a good idea to assign an assignment that has to do with culture, and most probably family. Your child has the full assignment on googleclassroom and can show it to you at any time.

We will be having a “Museum Walk” on December 2nd and 3rd in our classroom. That is when the project is due.  We assigned the project on November 21.  They had 5 days of work time in class to complete it, plus a weekend, and many nights.

Many students chose to talk and socialize during the work time.  We just wanted to bring it to your attention that the project is 100 points and due the first and second day after Thanksgiving.   This project could really boost some student’s grade and is not a traditional paper, but rather a more artistic approach to an assignment while still being aligned to English standards.

Please discuss with your child the importance of this project and that it is due the first and second day that we return from break.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions.

Best regards,

Ms. Sissener and Mr. Geske

Important updates about the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA)

Important updates about the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA)

Dear Partner,

The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) is a new data privacy law that applies to certain businesses which collect personal information from California residents. The new law goes into effect on January 1, 2020.

Google already offers data protection terms pursuant to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe. We are now also offering service provider terms under the CCPA, which will supplement those existing data protection terms (revised to reflect the CCPA), effective January 1, 2020. No additional action is required to accept the service provider terms if you've already agreed to the online data protection terms.

These service provider terms will be made available alongside new tools for partners to enable restricted data processing. Restricted data processing is intended to help advertisers and partners prepare for CCPA. Please note that restricted data processing operates differently across our products. Some products provided by Google will automatically operate using restricted data processing while action is required to enable restricted data processing for other products.

Subject to the service provider terms, we will act as your CCPA service provider with respect to data processed while restricted data processing is enabled. You can refer to this article for more information on restricted data processing and to determine whether restricted data processing meets your CCPA compliance needs.

Activity buses cancelled today

November 19th, 2019

Activity Buses this afternoon are cancelled because of forecasted rain.

In an abundance of caution, because many of the roads that surround our school can be impacted due to flooding, we will not run buses from MVHS at 5:35PM. Normal activities will take place, including athletics practices and tutoring, however, the buses at 5:35PM will not run.

Sincerely,

Todd Garelick

Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain Lion family,

We have reached the midpoint of the second quarter. This quarter, like all of the rest it seems, move along so quickly. Some people say time passes much quicker the older you get – so I will chalk it up to that concept. However, for many of us we feel like we just returned from Fall Break and we are looking at Thanksgiving already. To be fair, there are also a fair number of folks that can "feel" that Thanksgiving is the latest it can be this year.

On Wednesday we have our next Site Based Council meeting. The meeting is at 3:15 in the Collaboration Room in the library. The plan for this meeting is to finalize our Mountain View cell phone policy. This has been discussed at each of the previous SBC meetings and we are excited to complete this policy change.

Mid-term grades will be updated by tomorrow and we urge you to look at ParentVue this week. With the shortened week next week due to Thanksgiving and the quick turnaround before semester exams it is imperative that all of our students stay on top of their work.

Have a great week!

Please know that if your student is already attending our school through open enrollment, you do not have to reapply for next school year.

We are confident we have a very special and educationally enriching experience to offer students, and we hope you will share this news. Visit www.maranausd.org/openenroll for information about Open Enrollment.

Zero Hour Drop-off

Starting Tuesday November 12th the only open gate to campus will be the D-Wing gate. Please drop off your students by that gate instead of the main gate.

  • Students who are not initially eligible for a 2019-2020 parking permit due to tardies, may become eligible by demonstrating on-time behavior during the first quarter of the school year.
  • Any students who has 10 or more tardies during the during the first quarter, will have their parking permit revoked.

Office Hours for Mountain View are 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM

Students and Parents - The D-wing gate will be the only gate open in the morning, please pull forward to drop off your student. Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus.

With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors.

Please do not park in the first 10 stops in front of the JTED building. Those are reserved for the preschool. Also, please do not make any U-turns in that area.

Parents:
Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office.
We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office.
Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass.

Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.

A Note from the Attendance Office

When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded.

"STUDENT ABSENCES"

In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444.

"STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS"

Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals.

College, Career, Counseling

MVHS Parents/Guardians,

On Wednesday, November 13th, MVHS Counselors met with our sophomore students through their English class. Students were introduced to the differences between MVHS and University "Sweet 16" entrance requirements, their transcripts, off-campus privilege requirements, and what they can do to remain on track or get back on track.

In the next couple of weeks, parent(s)/guardian(s) will receive a copy of their student's transcript and a letter filled out by their student. The letter will list their GPA, credits, off campus privilege eligibility, graduation status, and what they can do to remain on track or get back on track for graduation. This letter will be delivered via USPS.

We encourage you to talk to your student(s) about their grades and remember that students still have time to make a positive change before the end of the semester. If you have any class specific questions, please reach out to your student's teacher(s) directly.

If your student lists themselves as off-track for graduation, we encourage you to have your student(s) make an appointment with their counselor to discuss credit recovery options.

A reminder, student's counselors are assigned by the student's last name and assignments are as follows:

A-B: Ms. Anderson

C-Gor: Ms. Kati

Gos-Marq: Ms. Wampler

Marr-Rol: Ms. Crawford

Rom-Z: Ms. Ruboyianes

UArizona information

Would you like to your student to start college with college credit? Check out this information regarding the CLEP test at the UA.
CLEP Exam Offerings
The Testing Office offers CLEP exams which offer college credit at a fraction of the cost than traditional classes for subjects that students may already be experts in! Total out of pocket costs for the CLEP exam is $134.

The most popular CLEP exams administered for The University of Arizona (UA) include Spanish Language, French Language, and Calculus. Undergraduate students can receive college credit to fulfill their prerequisites towards their degree. Students can take any CLEP exam prior to completing an earned credit through formal course work. Meaning, students must complete their CLEP exam before they complete a course in the same subject.

Please review the UA's Catalog CLEP policies for a list of subjects, and the scores required to earn college credit and which classes they could earn credit for.

Students can inquire directly by calling The Testing Office at (520) 621-7589 or visiting their web page.

Letter from MUSD Superintendent - Academic Calendar

District Letterhead

November 18, 2019

Dear MUSD Parent/Guardian:

Exciting News! The Marana school district is pleased to share the Governing Board approved academic calendar for the 2020-2021 school year. This calendar directly reflects the input received in the Academic Calendar Survey sent in October. Over 2,000 parents, students, and employees responded.

Based on the results from the survey, the following aspects of the academic calendar will continue:

  • The first day of school remains a Monday.
  • Each semester of the school year remains as equal, as possible, in instruction days.
  • Winter Break remains two full weeks and three weekends.
  • The last day of school is prior to Memorial Day.

In addition, based on the survey, the following aspects of the calendar will change beginning next school year:

  • There will be no school for students on the Wednesday of Thanksgiving Week. This student instructional day has moved to the last week of the school year.
  • The two half-days (Thursday/Friday), at the end of the first and third quarter, have changed to a full school day on each Thursday and no school for students on each Friday. This change maintains the same number of instructional hours for students while providing teachers a longer, more focused time for grading and completion of report cards.

Moving forward, we continue to provide the highest quality of instruction in the same number of instructional hours to ensure all of our students meet with life-long success.

You will find the calendar attached to this communication. Additionally, the academic calendar can be accessed on our District Website at www.maranausd.org/calendar.

I want to thank you for your participation and for your ongoing support of our District. We are confident this calendar will provide benefits to families, students, and employees.

Regards,

Doug Wilson, Ed.D.
Superintendent
