Q&A: Daffodils Sprouting Prematurely

Question: Help! Our daffodil bulbs are sprouting prematurely. We are having a mild winter so far, but it will surely get cold soon. Will this kill the plants? Is there anything we can do to stop them from growing? Did we plant them too shallowly?

Answer: Don't worry, your daffodils know what they are doing. Unless they grow really tall and start to form buds out of ground and then you get a severe cold snap, I wouldn't worry. Mother Nature will slow them down if necessary. If you want to help, you can mulch your daffodils with a 4" layer of hay or straw to keep them cool and convince them it's still winter.

Q&A: Cutting Back Schefflera

Question: Is it possible to cut back a schefflera very hard? Mine is more than ten years old and is taking over my living room.

Answer: Yes, you can cut your schefflera back. You can safely remove a third of the foliage; simply cut stems back to just above where a leaf emerges, and you should get a new sprout there. In the long run, you'll get a fuller bush if you cut some of the branches way back, so they will sprout near the main trunk, than shearing just the tips off all the branches.

Tip: Start Onions and Leeks

Start onion and leek seeds 8 to 10 weeks before your last frost date. Sow varieties appropriate for your area in flats of 70F, moistened soilless potting soil, 1/4 inch deep, covered lightly with vermiculite or sand.
