Two antibiotics may be better than one

CHICAGO (UPI) -- Two antibiotics prescribed together might be more effective in fighting pathogenic bacteria than either drug on its own, U.S. researchers said.

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Weizman Institute of Science in Israel said the antibiotics lankacidin and lankamycin -- produced naturally by the microbe streptomyces -- are marginally effective in warding off pathogens.

Lead investigator Alexander Mankin, professor and associate director of the Illinois school's Center for Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, found that when used together, the two antibiotics are much more successful in inhibiting growth of dangerous pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and possibly others.

Lankacidin and lankamycin act upon the ribosomes -- the protein-synthesizing factories of the cell. Some antibiotics stave off an infection by preventing the ribosome from assembling proteins, while others bind and block the protein's passage, the researchers say.

Biochemical analysis and molecular modeling showed that lankamycin binds in the ribosomal tunnel right next to lankacidin.

"What we found most amazing is that the two antibiotics appeared to help each other in stopping pathogens from making new proteins and in inhibiting bacterial growth," Mankin said in a statement.

The research is published in the online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dental health important in pets

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (UPI) -- Most U.S. adults say they brush their teeth daily few but pet owners brush their pets' teeth, even though pet dental hygiene is important, experts say.

"Most people have no idea that dental health is so important to their pets," Dr. Larry Corry, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association, says in a statement. "In fact, veterinarians report that periodontal disease is the most commonly diagnosed problem in dogs and cats. This can lead to painful infections of the mouth, and in severe cases these infections can spread and become life-threatening conditions.

"The American Veterinary Medical Association is encouraging all dog and cat owners to regularly brush their pet's teeth and regularly see their veterinarian for checkups."

The AVMA offers an informative video giving step-by-step instructions on how to brush a pet's teeth at www.petdental.com.

"Periodontal disease, an infection of the gums, is incredibly common in pets, and it can be quite serious," Dr. Brook Niemiec, a board certified veterinary dental specialist, says. "It's estimated that by the age of 2, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats have some form of periodontal disease, which has been linked to diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease and other life threatening disorders. The best way to prevent periodontal disease is by regularly brushing your pet's teeth and regularly visiting a veterinarian."

Flu season worse for those with asthma

HORSHAM, Pa. (UPI) -- The U.S. subsidiary of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries in Israel has an educational resource it says can help asthma patients cope during flu season.

Teva Respiratory officials say those with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are at higher risk of developing severe respiratory symptoms if they get a cold or the flu and the Web site www.FluandAsthma.com may offer some assistance.

"Being prepared for the cold and flu season is critical for people with asthma and COPD because even a minor respiratory infection can trigger or worsen symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness, which can last for days or even weeks," Dr. Erwin W. Gelfand, chair of pediatrics at National Jewish Health in Denver, says in a statement. "In addition to getting their flu shots, there are things people with asthma and COPD can do to help protect themselves and their loved ones this winter."

The Web site provides an asthma/COPD action plan, tips for getting through the cold and flu season and key questions to ask your doctor, which patients can print and bring with them to checkups to ensure they get the most out of each visit, Gelfand says.

State, local governments cutting benefits

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- U.S. state and local governments have made significant changes in their benefit offerings including healthcare, a survey indicates.

An online survey of government managers by the Center for State and Local Government Excellence indicates:

-- 69 percent report increased employee contributions.

-- 25 percent say years required to vest were added.

-- 24 percent added wellness programs, 24-hour nurse lines or onsite clinics.

-- 23 percent reduced benefits.

-- 15 percent tiered benefits.

-- 10 percent decreased employer contributions.

Even furloughs have not produced the savings that had been anticipated in some places - -- 61 percent of respondents say they achieved the savings that had been budgeted, 39 percent said they did not.

The survey was conducted among 396 members of the International Public Management Association for Human Resources and the National Association of State Personnel Executives from Nov. 18 to Dec. 14, 2009.
