Obama: Deficit reduction 'critical'

In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama praised the Senate for restoring a so-called pay-as-you-go law requiring that any new spending be paid for with tax increases or equivalent spending cuts elsewhere in the budget. He reminded listeners he has proposed a freeze in discretionary spending and a bipartisan commission to explore ways to cut the federal deficit by reducing spending or increasing revenues.

U.N. toll in Haiti 84 dead, 15 missing

The death toll includes 40 civilian staffers, 24 members of the U.N. peacekeeping force and 18 police officers, a World Food Program employee and a volunteer. Those found dead in the ruins of the U.N. headquarters in Port-au-Prince included Hedy Annabi, the Tunisian head of the mission.

China cancels military visits over Taiwan

Defense Ministry spokesman Huang Xueping issued a statement, carried by the state-run Chinese news agency Xinhua, indicating the move was being made to bring attention to the severe harm of the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, and comes after Washington announced Friday it would sell Patriot missiles, Black Hawk helicopters and minesweepers to Taipei.
