A Community of Empowered, Innovative and Engaged Citizens Mountain Lion Monday Principal's Message Good evening Mountain View family, Welcome back to school and the beginning of the second quarter. We hope everyone enjoyed their break and had the opportunity to spend time with family. We are right back at it and excited to continue our mission at Mountain View. We also are excited to work with our teachers and students as we continue to transform our teaching and grading practices on our campus. When we reflect on the first quarter and the shifts we made at our school we are very encouraged. A quote I saw recently said, "The best view comes after the hardest climb." (author unknown) In so many ways that encapsulates what we desire for our students at Mountain View. The process of learning can be very difficult and the demands on our students have never been greater. Yet, after all of the hard work and dedication to learning, the view is different. The view is better. Another quote, from Dr. Seuss, might say it even better – "Be sure when you step, step with care and great tact. And remember life is a great balancing act. And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed) Kid, you'll move mountains." Simple. Concise. Dr. Seuss at his finest. Our hope is that all of our students will move mountains and will make the hardest climb so they can see the best views. Again, welcome back. This is a busy quarter and an important eight weeks for all of our students to focus on their work and finish the first semester strong. The next few weeks will move fast and it is important for our students to be engaged in their classes and to take advantage of all of the interventions that we have in place. Our goal is to provide our parents with accurate measurements of learning at the end of the semester. To finish the quote from Dr. Seuss, "Kid, you'll move mountains! You're off to great places. Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So…get on your way!" It is time to continue our journey, together, as our mountain is waiting. Have a great week. Todd Garelick Principal Mountain View High School (52) 579-4427 Things to Know    From the MVHS Front Office, Teen Maze – information for parents! On Tuesday, October 29th, all students in world history classes will be participating in the Teen Maze program.  Teen Maze is a drug and alcohol awareness prevention program sponsored by the Marana Prevention Alliance.  Students will begin in a staged area as they enter the library.  At that point they will be given a passport with will take them to three different scenario/consequence tables in the library.  Students will be in small groups, meeting with an adult community member representing their respective agency function – for example – the emergency room, a police officer, a treatment program, seeing a judge or probation officer.  We have offered this program the last two years and it was both well-done and well-received by students.  If you don't want your student to participate, please contact their work history teacher and an alternate setting will be provided. Parents and Students, There will be some new requirements for parking permits and off-campus passes for next year, please see below: Parking Permits: To be eligible for a parking permit for the 2019-2020 school year:  1) Meet all parking privilege expectations; 2) Have no more than 10 tardies in your first scheduled class of the day during the 4th quarter. Students who are not initially eligible for a 2019-2020 parking permit due to tardies, may become eligible by demonstrating on-time behavior during the first quarter of the school year. Any students who has 10 or more tardies during the during the first quarter, will have their parking permit revoked. Off-Campus Passes: To be eligible for an off-campus pass for the 2019-2020 school year:  1) Meet all off-campus pass expectations; 2) Have no more than 10 tardies in periods 2-6 during the 4th quarter. Students who are not initially eligible for a 2019-2020 off-campus pass due to tardies, may become eligible by demonstrating on-time behavior during the first quarter of the school year. Any students who has 10 or more tardies during the first quarter, will have their off-campus pass revoked for three-weeks.   All students should have their student ID with them at all times. If your student needs one, they can get one in the Bookstore.   Office Hours for Mountain View are 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM   Students and Parents - The D-wing gate is open in the morning, please pull forward to drop off your student. Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus. With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors.  Please do not park in the first 10 stops in front of the JTED building. Those are reserved for the preschool. Also, please do not make any U-turns in that area. Parents: Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office. We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office. Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass. Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.  A Note from the Attendance Office When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded. "STUDENT ABSENCES" In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444.  "STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS" Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals. College, Career, Counseling   MVHS Parents, We hope that your student(s) had a relaxing fall break and is ready for a strong finish to their first semester of the 2019-2020 school year. We want to remind you that your student's first quarter report card will be available to view in StudentVUE on Wednesday, October 23rd.  We encourage you to talk to your student(s) about their grades and remember that students still have time to make a positive change before the end of the semester. If you have any class specific questions, please reach out to your student's teacher directly. Students will be introduced to the differences between MVHS graduation requirements and In-State University "Sweet 16" entrance requirements, national and school specific risk factors that can cause them to be at-risk for on time graduation, and what they can do to remain on track or get back on track for graduation.
