Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain View families,

Happy New Year. We are a week into 2019 already and I still keep writing 2018. I have a feeling that will happen a few more times. We also have to get used to the cold temperatures. This morning I had to scrape ice from my windshield. And, since it has been a while I no longer have an ice scraper – the credit card trick didn't quite get the job done.

This morning you may have noticed a change in our traffic pattern. We have moved our bus drop off and bus pick up to the west service drive along the driving range at Crooked Tree Golf Course. We are hopeful that this will alleviate some of our traffic concerns and limit the bottle-necking that occurred at our entry and exit points along Linda Vista. Our hope is that by moving the buses we will allow for less congestion for the parents to drop their students off and help move cars along Linda Vista and Thornydale. Today was the first day but the feedback thus far was good.

This time of year will be very busy with a number of events coming in January. We will be hosting AP Night and Future Mountain Lion Night as well as working with our current students on their schedules for next school year. Keep an eye out for more information related to these and the many other events coming this spring.

Welcome back, Happy New Year and thank you.

Things to Know

 From the MVHS Front Office,

All students should have their student ID with them at all times. If your student needs one, they can get one in the Bookstore.

Office Hours for Mountain View are 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM

Students and Parents - The D-wing gate is now open in the morning, please pull forward to drop off your student. Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus.

With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors.

Please do not park in the first 10 stops in front of the JTED building. Those are reserved for the preschool. Also, please do not make any U-turns in that area.

Parents:
Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office.
We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office.
Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass.

Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.

A Note from the Attendance Office

When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded.

"STUDENT ABSENCES"

In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444. If a "request to excuse" message is not received, the attendance clerks will attempt to contact the parent/guardian so they may properly record the student's absence(s). If no response is received from the parent/guardian the absence(s) will be recorded as unexcused.

"STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS"

Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals.

Parents/Guardians,

Welcome back to school and welcome to 2019! We are excited to start a new semester and a new year here at MVHS.

In just a few weeks we will begin planning for students' 2019-2020 school courses! Can you believe it?!

These next few weeks are a great time to talk to your student(s) about their future plans. Encourage your student(s) to think about what courses can support their post-high school plan or explore interests they may have. Counselors will be presenting course request information (new courses, grad requirements, university entrance requirements, course entry deadlines, 0 hour request & TA request process) the week of January 21st and should be able to answer any questions students think of in the following weeks.

In addition, counselors will meet with every junior student the week of January 28th, to talk with students about their post-high school plan and senior year course requests prior to the course request entry deadline.

Please see attached January Newsletter and make it a great 2019!

PSAT scores update: If your student was unable to come to today's score review, have them look in the google classroom for their graduating class. They will find an informational video created by CollegeBoard and a PowerPoint of the presentation given today. Also, please have them come to the counseling office to pick up their test book and paper score report. Contact Ms. Kati at B.J.Kati@maranausd.org if you have any questions.

Things you should do after taking the PSAT/NMSQT

Congratulations! Your teen took the PSAT/NMSQT® at school in October 2018. This test gives students a chance to take the next step to college. Here's what your teen can do to make the most out of their scores:

§ Log in to or create a College Board account online. PSAT/NMSQT scores will be released online by December 12, 2018. Students should log in to their College Board account to see scores and test performance details.

§ Get free, personalized SAT practice. The PSAT/NMSQT is great preparation for the SAT®. Your teen's score unlocks a free, personalized practice through Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy®. Students go to satpractice.org, create an account, and link their College Board and Khan Academy accounts for a plan based on their test results.

§ Review AP course recommendations. Student score reports identify AP® courses that are the best match for them. AP can give your teen an edge in the admission process and earn them college credit while in high school, which saves time and money in college.

§ Explore Careers. When students log in to see their scores, they can connect with Roadmap to Careers. They answer questions to find out which careers interest them, what degrees they'll need, and what high school courses to take. They can watch video interviews with people in professions related to their interests.

§ Get started on BigFuture. Students can begin their College Search using BigFuture™.

§ Register for the SAT. Take the next step toward college by registering. We will be holding the SAT here at Mountain View High School on March 9th. Have your teen register online at collegeboard.org

§ Questions about how to use PSAT/NMSQT scores? Have your student attend the PSAT Score Review during Summit on December 17th in the Library.

For questions, email Britnee Kati at B.J.Kati@maranausd.org
