Lab rats turned into junk food junkies

JUPITER, Fla. (UPI) -- Scientists in the United States say lab rats raised on a diet of junk food appeared to prefer to starve themselves rather than switch over to healthier food.

Research out of Scripps Florida contends that the high-fat, high-calorie food consumed by the rodents affected their brains in much the same way that cocaine alters human brains.

The conclusions could bolster what the Palm Beach Post said Monday was an increasingly popular theory that junk food has addictive characteristics that contribute to the surge in obesity in the United States.

The results of the 3-year study were published Sunday in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

Paul Kenny, one of the authors, told the Post rats that consumed cheesecake, icing and other products found at a Florida supermarket not only made the rats fat but triggered behaviors that included a refusal to eat more-nutritious fare, and a refusal to lay off the fattening stuff even when a mild electric shock was administered.

Tanning salons push back on regulations

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- The trade association for the U.S. tanning salon industry says taxes and restrictions proposed by federal regulators are excessive.

The Indoor Tanning Association said in a written statement it hoped the Food and Drug Administration would study the matter further and "base any decision on sound science."

An FDA advisory last week recommended the agency consider rules requiring teenagers get their parents' permission before visiting a tanning salon. They also recommended raising the classification of tanning beds as medical devices to allow greater regulation.

In addition, healthcare reform legislation includes a 10 percent tax that could dissuade cash-strapped teens from using tanning beds, which some critics say can increase the risk of skin cancer.

"We'd like to see tanning beds banned completely, but this is a good start," Dr. Bruce Katz, spokesman for the Skin Cancer Foundation, told USA Today.

Masks, N95 respirators, both prevent H1N1

SINGAPORE (UPI) -- Surgical masks may be as effective as N95 respirators in preventing hospital staff from catching H1N1, researchers in Singapore said.

Study author Dr. Brenda Sze Peng Ang of the Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore and colleagues analyzed the incidence of H1N1 among the hospital's healthcare workers.

From June 19 to July 21, 2009, hospital healthcare workers wore N95 respirators in the emergency room and an H1N1 isolation area, but from July 22 to Aug. 31, surgical masks were used in the same areas.

The study, published online ahead of the April issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases, found the incidence of H1N1 among the hospital workers remained low during both periods, and in all cases transmission was believed to have occurred among the general public and not among patients.

"What is more important than using high-filtration or respirator masks for known or suspected cases is to have a uniform policy, such as using surgical masks, when in close contact with all patients," the researchers said in a statement.

Scientists to go public on radiology fears

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Scientists concerned about risks associated with growing use of radiology in the United States say they are set to take their concerns public this week.

The scientists say they will speak up Tuesday at a Food and Drug Administration meeting on protecting patients from unnecessary exposure to radiation, The New York Times reported. The FDA has routinely disregarded urgent warnings by government experts about potential risk from routine use of CT scans for colon cancer screening, the newspaper said, citing FDA documents and interviews with agency scientists.

The FDA meeting is said to be part of the agency's re-evaluation of risks associated with routine radiology, the newspaper said.

An estimated 70 million CT scans are administered annually in the United States -- up from about 3 million three decades ago. Researchers estimate as many as 14,000 people die each year of cancers resulting from such exposure, the Times reported.
