Ounce of prevention may prevent pounds

AUSTIN, Texas (UPI) -- Prevention programs may be the best way to fight child obesity, U.S. researchers said.

A study examining regional changes in child obesity between 2000-2005, published in the journal Obesity, found a local obesity prevention program combining state and local community nutrition and exercise programs with media attention, and an evidence-based school health approach in the El Paso, Texas, region, was most effective statewide in decreasing childhood obesity.

The El Paso fourth graders had a decrease of 13 percent in obesity prevalence.

"Data from the El Paso region show us that obesity prevention efforts, when implemented on a broad scale, can be successful," study leader Deanna Hoelscher of the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living, Austin, Texas, said in a statement.

Hoelscher said the results of the study -- called SPAN, or Schools Physical Activity and Nutrition -- illustrated the importance of measuring prevalence at the local level rather than relying on national or state estimates to monitor trends.

Halloween toothbrush, a trick or a treat?

MINNEAPOLIS, Mich. (UPI) -- Minnesota dentists urge Halloween candy buyers to steer clear of tooth-enamel-eroding "sour candy."

Members of the Minnesota Dental Association say acids in hard and gummy candies that promise an "extreme" sour taste or a sweet and sour experience can weaken protective tooth enamel and make teeth prone to decay.

"As dentists, we see an alarming number of children with permanent erosion of the dental enamel on their teeth," Dr. Bruce Templeton, president of the Minnesota Dental Association in Minneapolis, says in a statement. "We know that the increasingly popular sour candies are a factor, so we invite you to consider other alternatives for Halloween treats."

Also better for teeth than sticky take-long-to-eat candy like caramels are small candy bars that are eaten quickly and don't linger. Other tooth-friendly treat ideas the dentists suggest are:

-- Small bags of chips, peanuts or pretzels.

-- Sugarless gum.

-- Non-food items like money, stickers or toothbrushes.

-- Toothbrushes.
