Tame Your Appetite All Day Long Find yourself hungrier than a high-school football team at 11 a.m. or foraging for munchies at 3? No matter what your appetite's tough spot is, you can get it under control and keep your healthy habits on track with these tricks: You Have: Midmorning Hunger Pangs Try: Drinking skim milk instead of juice at breakfast. Dieters who did this felt more satisfied by their morning meal, probably because the proteins in milk are better at quelling hunger than the carbs in fruit drinks. You Have: The Afternoon Munchies Try: Eating a whole-grain cereal at breakfast and chewing gum after lunch. People who do either feel full longer, have fewer cravings for sweets and eat fewer afternoon snacks than people who don't. You Have: Seconds. And Thirds. And Fourths Try: Eating walnuts before dinner. The healthy fat in about six walnut halves triggers a chain reaction that slows the rate at which your stomach empties, so you'll be less likely to overeat. You Have: A Chocolate Craving Try: Walking down the hall (not toward the vending machine!). A 15-minute walk nixed cravings in a group of chocoholics, probably because the feel-good hit they got from moving around gave them what they were seeking from chocolate -- minus the extra calories and weight! You Have: A Little Movie With Your Popcorn Try: Watching a funny movie instead of a tearjerker. When people in a study watched a happy movie, they ate close to 30 percent less popcorn than when they saw a sad film. And make that air-popped, even if you have to bring it from home. ======== The YOU Docs, Mehmet Oz and Mike Roizen, are authors of "YOU: On a Diet." Want more?
