Q&A: Pinching Back Plants Question: Do any of the following plants need to be pinched back for thicker growth: snapdragons, impatiens, petunias, and salvia? Answer: To maintain bushy growth, all these annuals should be pinched back, starting when they are seedlings. Wait until they have put on several inches of growth before pinching out the growing tips. This will encourage branching. You can continue to occasionally pinch back shoots, or cut back leggy growth, throughout the summer to encourage longer bloom. |

Q&A: Bulbs Sprout During Warm Spell Question: A number of my bulbs are coming up early due to the unseasonably warm weather we have had in the northeast. Now we are getting a cold snap. Will the cold weather damage the sprouting bulbs? Can I do anything to stop/fix and damage? Answer: You shouldn't have any problems. The shoots may be nipped by the cold, but early-blooming hardy bulbs are prepared for this and have more buds waiting. If the flowers are up and open, they may be damaged, but if it's just the leaves I wouldn't worry. Just wait patiently until a few warm days, and voila! Instant color! You'll find this happens more years than it doesn't! |

Tip: Prune Buddleia In warm areas, prune summer-blooming shrubs such as buddleia. Pruning stimulates new growth that produces the summer flowers. Prune out any dead or damaged branches and older wood that is less productive. |
