Observing Dogs That Itch Frequently
By Damian Cross It is rather understandable to see great discomfort in pet owners as they watch their pet scratch themselves endlessly, in a scratching frenzy that goes beyond hair removal, and scratch their skin so hard they hurt their skin to the point that blood spurts out. This spot, void of any hair, and resembling an active volcano is often called the Hot Spot, and is a reason for embarrassment for many pet owners. Besides the discomfort caused by the image of watching this hot spot, dog owners are also driven to lunacy by the constant scratching noise and whining accompanied by the scratching procedure.
A scratchy dog is something very few pet owners have the temperament to tolerate for too long. Soon they will become weary and look for the fastest solution to this annoying situation.
There are several chemical solutions available in the market that can provide a solution to this problem. And even though many of these treatments have been proven to work, thay could have adverse, if not fatal result on a dog. Dog owners would be wise to turn to grooming as their first defense against their dogs persistent itching. Dog owners should be aware of any allergies to chemicals in their dog, and possibly turn to grooming as their first choice to solving the problem.
One of the best choices when approaching an itchy dog is brushing him daily. Many scratching situations are caused by pollens, dirt, mats, and dander that stay on the dog's coat. If the pollens, dirt, and dander are left on the dog, they will start irritating the dog's skin and the animal will react as if he wanted to rip off that side of him. The brushing activity will do away with these contaminants, and prevent the buildup in the Dog's skin. Not only will your dog be relieved of very undesirable situations, you will be spending quality time with your pet, and he will love you for it.
Taking the time to bathe your pet is another great way to fight itchy skin problems. However, refrain from bathing your pet on a daily basis. This practice will end up hurting your dog by removing essential oils from his skin. When your dog is deployed of these oils in his skin, it will turn dry and susceptible to infection. Dry skin conditions in a dog can be just as uncomfortable and itchy on a dog as it is on humans.
Also, when bathing your pet pay attention to his ears. Small insects aim to reside in this area and live off your dog by biting his skin. If you happen to notice any foreign creatures around your dogs ears, where it seems he doesn't want to be touched, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. Many of these ear mites go unnoticed, and as much as you believe to have corrected the situation, a more aggressive solution is probably necessary.
If despite you every effort to solve the itchy problem you don't seem to succeed. Consult your veterinarian for a more thorough examination of your dog and possible solutions. He might be able to recommend a special shampoo that attacks the bacteria affecting your dog directly. The use of a cone shaped collar might also be necessary to prevent your dog from hurting himself any further. Remember, a pet that scratches himself constantly is no pet game, it could be a serious illness that demands careful attention.
