Vaccinations effective on allergies

MOSS BEACH, Calif. (UPI) -- U.S. researchers say taking allergy immunotherapy -- vaccinations or shots -- works.

The 10-year retrospective study found immunotherapy reduces total healthcare costs in children with allergic rhinitis -- hay fever -- by one-third, and prescription costs by 16 percent. Allergen immunotherapy is the only treatment shown to decrease the risk of allergic rhinitis developing into asthma or other allergies, the researchers say.

"This large-scale, comparative effectiveness study of health outcomes clearly demonstrates the benefits of allergen immunotherapy for children with allergic rhinitis," lead study author Cheryl Hankin -- president and chief scientific officer of BioMedEcon, a provider of health economics and outcomes research based in Moss Beach, Calif. -- said in a statement.

"Findings are even more impressive, considering the results were based on 'real world' healthcare delivery, rather than on treatment provided within a tightly controlled clinical trial."

The study compared Florida Medicaid claims data of 2,770 children with allergic rhinitis who received allergen immunotherapy to a matched control group of over 11,000 affected children who did not receive such treatment.

The findings are published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

New stroke therapy works in rats

IRVINE, Calif. (UPI) -- U.S. researchers say a protein may help restore limb function long after a stroke.

Post-doctoral researcher Magda Guerra-Crespo of University of California, Irvine, tested the small protein transforming growth factor alpha or TGF alpha in two rat studies.

In the first study, published in the journal Neuroscience, rats that suffered an induced stroke and had TGF alpha administered directly to the brain one month after the stroke -- a time equal to about a year for humans -- had 99 percent of movement restored. The control rats suffering stroke had 30 percent recovery.

In the second study, published online in the Journal of Stroke & Cerebrovascular Diseases, the rats that had a different chemical version of TGF alpha administered in their noses -- simulating a nasal spray -- regained 70 percent of their function.

"No drugs exist that will help a stroke after a few days. If you have a stroke, you don't have many treatment options," study senior co-author James Fallon said in a statement. "Now we have evidence there may be therapies that can repair damage to a significant degree long after the stroke. It's a completely unexpected and remarkable finding, and it's worth trying in humans."

Alzheimer's discovery may lead to therapy

ORLANDO, Fla. (UPI) -- U.S. researchers say a previously unknown mechanism may drive the early brain function deterioration of Alzheimer's victims.

University of Central Florida researchers say it has been known amyloid-beta gums up brain cells when it becomes too concentrated because it forms damaging deposits on the cells known as plaques. These prevent normal electrical signal generation in the cells, eventually killing them and driving the memory loss and other problems that plague Alzheimer's sufferers.

Study leader James Hickman explored impacts of very low amyloid-beta concentrations on healthy cells in an effort to mimic the earlier stages of Alzheimer's. The researcher found that over time, though there are no outward signs of damage, exposure to moderate amyloid-beta concentrations somehow prevents electrical signals from traveling normally through the cells.

Because the effect is seen in otherwise healthy cells, Hickman says the team may have uncovered a critical process in the progression of Alzheimer's that could occur before a person shows any known signs of brain impairment.

"What we're claiming is that before you have any behavioral clues, these electrical transmission problems may be occurring," Hickman says in a statement.

If this proves true, then the team has opened a promising potential path to an Alzheimer's treatment, Hickman says. In contrast, all currently available treatments manage symptoms of Alzheimer's after they first appear -- when it is likely too late for prevention -- the study concludes.

To achieve resolutions, action plan needed

CHICAGO (UPI) -- Many New Year's resolutions have been forgotten by now but a U.S. therapist suggests every moment holds the possibility for positive change.

Dr. Kimberly Dennis, medical director of Timberline Knolls -- who treats women struggling from eating disorders, substance abuse and mood disorders - says she believes a New Year's resolution is simply a goal declared at the start of the year. However, by taking appropriate steps, resolutions can be realized at any time.

"When we think of possibilities, we begin to dream of who we can become," Dennis says in a statement. "We see this time as a chance for renewal -- for with a New Year is an opportunity to embrace change and use the season of new beginnings as a way to ignite our good intentions by developing resolutions to guide us on our journey to new places."

Resolutions are goals, and when it comes to goals, a plan of action is needed, Dennis says. Setting a goal without taking any action ends in the same result as if the goal had never been set in the first place.

To reach goals, Dennis recommends:

-- Make specific, non-broad goals.

-- Commitment with a plan of action.

-- Set clear and achievable steps within this plan of action.

-- Allow other people to help.

-- Believe in a power greater than yourself.
