McChrystal hints at Taliban reconciliation

Gen. Stanley McChrystal told Tuesday's Financial Times that the influx of 30,000 U.S. troops into the country, many of whom are being sent to the Taliban stronghold of Helmand province, is meant to help shape conditions which allow people to come to a truly equitable solution to how the Afghan people are governed.

Attack on Norway mullah called amateur

Finn Abrahamsen, former chief Oslo police inspector, told Norway's national broadcaster NRK his analysis of a Monday incident in which shots were fired at the apartment of controversial Mullah Krekar is that the attackers took too many risks to be professionals.

Poll: Most oppose more Haiti immigrants

In a survey released Tuesday, Gallup said the immigration issue produces a sharp political divide, with 57 percent of Democrats in favor of allowing more immigrants, while 57 percent of independents and 67 percent of Republicans are opposed.

Taliban insurgency increasingly effective

CNN reports the Dec. 22 briefing by Maj. Gen. Michael Flynn, which it obtained, says the Taliban's organizational capabilities and operational reach are qualitatively and geographically expanding, giving it greater capability for more frequent attacks.
