Senate moderates wary of cap-and-trade

The creation of an economy-wide cap-and-trade system -- which would help curb greenhouse gas emissions and create a market for polluting entities by buying and selling carbon allowances -- was in the climate measure passed by the House this year. However, a bruising healthcare fight, a still-weak economy and the prospect of little or no Republican support for a climate bill with cap-and-trade language has left moderate Democrats with little desire to tackle another sweeping initiative, Politico reported Monday.

Zardari hits out against critics

Speaking at a gathering in Naudero near his hometown in Sind province to observe the second anniversary of the assassination of his wife and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, Zardari hit out against his critics, the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan reported. Zardari and his Pakistan People's Party were elected to power last year.

Iran's judiciary must swiftly arrest the rioters who offended sanctities and values held dear in Islam and Iran," Naghavi Hosseini, a member of the Parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, told state-run Islamic Republic News Agency.
