Q&A: Thinning Seedlings Question: When starting my seeds indoors, I planted 3 seeds in each peat pot, and they all came up. Should I transplant 2 of them? Answer: You want to end up with one seedling per container. Yes, you can transplant 2 of them, but you should consider whether you really need those extra plants. Remember, if you planned your garden for 6 tomatoes, you donOt want to end up with 18 plants! A better bet is to snip off the 2 weaker seedlings at the soil line. That way, you wonOt disturb the roots of the one you want to keep. But if you just canOt bear to do that, then go ahead and gently transplant them. |

Q&A: Daffodils Sprouting Prematurely Question: Help! Our daffodil bulbs are sprouting prematurely. We are having a mild winter so far, but it will surely get cold soon. Will this kill the plants? Is there anything we can do to stop them from growing? Did we plant them too shallowly? Answer: Don't worry, your daffodils know what they are doing. Unless they grow really tall and start to form buds out of ground and then you get a severe cold snap, I wouldn't worry. Mother Nature will slow them down if necessary. If you want to help, you can mulch your daffodils with a 4" layer of hay or straw to keep them cool and convince them it's still winter.. |
