Asthma H1N1 risk factor

TORONTO (UPI) -- Asthma is a significant risk factor for severe disease in children with pandemic H1N1 compared with the seasonal flu, researchers in Canada found.

Researchers of The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto looked at the medical charts of 58 children admitted to the hospital from May 8 to July 22 and compared them to 200 children admitted with seasonal influenza between 2004-2009.

Every year, the hospital admits about 40 children under 18 years of age with seasonal influenza, the researchers said.

Twenty-two per cent of children admitted with H1N1 had asthma compared with 6 percent of those admitted with seasonal influenza.

The study found asthma was determined as a prior diagnosis of asthma or reactive airways disease, or a history of wheeze with the use of inhalers.

The study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, found almost half of all admissions to the intensive care unit for H1N1 influenza were children with asthma.

The children with H1N1 influenza were older than those admitted for seasonal flu, with significantly more over the age of 5. Eighty-four percent of the children arrived at the hospital with fever and cough, with or without additional symptoms, but 37 percent had gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting and/or diarrhea, the researchers said.

Kids watch more TV in home-based day cares

SEATTLE (UPI) -- Children in home-based day cares watched TV for 2.4 hours per day on average, compared with 0.4 hours in center-based settings, U.S. researchers found.

Dr. Dimitri A. Christakis, the lead researcher and director of the Center for Child Health, Behavior and Development at Seattle Children's Research Institute and professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine, looked at television use in 168 child-care programs in four states.

The majority of preschoolers are commonly cared for by someone other than a parent, away from home in a child-care setting -- either home-based day care or center-based care, which is more like a preschool with children of similar ages, Christakis said.

The study, to be published in the December issue of Pediatrics, found that among preschool-age children, those in home-based day cares watched TV for 2.4 hours per day on average, compared with 0.4 hours in center-based settings.

However, some home-based programs were closer to the center-based programs in amount of time they used television, particularly those programs in which the staff had college degrees, the study said.
