Q&A: Overwintering Geraniums Question: I have my geraniums in pots in my hobby greenhouse. The 1st of December I plan on closing down the greenhouse. What is the best way to keep them until the 1st of March--leave them in the pots or take them out and put them in the cellar? Answer: As long as your greenhouse stays above freezing, you can leave them in the pots. Just cut the stems back even with the sides of the pots and don't water the plants until you see new bud growth in the spring. Some people take their plants out of the pots, shake the soil off the roots, and hang them upside down in a cool, dark, airy location. Either way works just fine. |

Q&A: Espaliers and Pear Trees Question: What do I need to make a pear tree into an espalier? Answer: Pear trees (and apple trees, too) are good candidates for espaliers. All you need is a fence or a wall for the plant to grow against, some fabric to tie the branches in place, and some sharp pruners. It's a 4 to 5 year process to get the basic framework of your espalier completed, but once that's done it's just a matter of rubbing out buds and pruning off misplaced branches. I suggest that you find a book with illustrated steps to training as a guide. Good luck with your new tree! |

Tip: Cut Hydrangea Flowers To have dried hydrangea flowers for winter use, cut 'PeeGee' hydrangeas this fall. The large white, 1 to 2 foot diameter flower heads develop in late summer. The flowers turn a pinkish-tan by fall. |
