You Cat Using the Toilet? It's Very Possible! By Gwen Lombardi I have to admit I've never owned a cat that could use the commode/toilet, however, I have heard many stories of cats that have. From what I understand not every cat becomes potty-trained as easily as some, you can find books that are devoted to teaching your cat to use the toilet and you can buy commercial kits to make the training easier. These kits consist of a plastic form that fits between the toilet seat and porcelain rim, inside the form is a compartment for litter that contain holes that allow the urine to drain through. It might help to get a packet of catnip to make the litter more attractive to the cat. It appears to me that there are 2 ways to approach commode training. You can either make the commode into a litter box or make the litter box into a commode. The former requires you to give up one of your toilets until the training is complete, and the latter requires you to acquire an additional toilet seat. If your litter box is already located in the bathroom training will be smoother. You can add the toilet seat to the litter box and gradually increase the height of the sides of the box until your cat is use to standing on the toilet seat and urinating and defecating into the litter below. Litter can eventually be replaced by water. Hopefully, your cat will adjust to the regular toilet after he has been trained to use the makeshift one. If you make the toilet into a litter box, you gradually reduce the litter contained in the box portion until the cat becomes used to urinating and defecating directly into the water in the toilet bowl. If the training goes too rapidly and the cat backsides or if the cat falls into the toilet, you'll probably have to start over with your training. Good luck to everyone! ======== This article is brought to you by Gwen Lombardi owner and webmaster for Your Healthy-Pet.com.
