| Orson Johnson Here are five interesting ideas for tourists in Madrid to take advantage of during their holiday in Spain.
1. Watch a bullfight at Vista Alegre or Las Ventas. Las Ventas is the more popular choice, simply because it is more centrally located and can seat up to 20,000 people at a time. Vista Alegre is used more as a sports or concert venue. The venues are almost never filled to capacity and getting tickets should not be a problem.
2. Taking a day trip when you are in Madrid, is a great way to learn what the outskirts of Madrid have to offer when it comes to picturesque towns, history and architecture. The two most popular destinations when it comes to day trips are Toledo and Segovia. Toledo was once the capital of Spain and is a fortress like city that exudes character as you approach. It’s a fascinating place to visit and you could always visit the cathedral, synagogue and the mosque in Toledo, symbols of Toledo’s religious harmony. You can also visit the local souvenir shops and purchase a Toledo sword, made from the steel that Toledo is world famous for; this would make a perfect memento of your trip. Segovia is famous for its fairytale castle, Alcazar, rumoured to have inspired the castle in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. Another attraction that is popular with tourists in Segovia is a two thousand year old Roman aqueduct that is still in prime condition.
3. Have a night out on the town. Madrid is to Spain, what New York is to America; the city that never sleeps. There are several districts in Madrid that are buzzing with activity every night. Malasana is where you need to go if your tastes run to alternative music - indie, rock, pop and punk, while Cheuca is the place to be for great dance music.
4. Visit the Museo Del Prado, the most visited Museum in Spain. Open seven days a week and without an entry fee depending on which day you plan on visiting, the Prado museum houses some of the finest collections of European art dating from the 14th to the 19th centuries. In terms of showcasing its Spanish art history, the museum houses some of the best work of Velázquez, Goya and El Greco.
5. Try Chocolate con Churros, a delicious treat that is famous for being a favoured Spanish breakfast option. It’s guaranteed to satisfy your chocolate cravings as well. You can also try Cochinillo or roast suckling pig, which is a local delicacy in the region.
