Why Just Passing Through is Just Fine

Max Brockbank

Your last stop in London was brief. You arrived in the evening, met clients first thing the next morning, and left on the Eurostar to the next venue in the afternoon. Or maybe you were just passing through on your way from here to there. Whatever the circumstances, you told yourself, "The next time I'm in London, I'm going to stay for a day or two to make the most of it."

Now it's on the horizon again, and your schedule allows a bit of flexibility. This would be a fantastic opportunity to add a couple of days to your trip, even at the last minute, and spend some time in Britain's capital city.

The summer crowds that come from across the globe, swelling the city and its venues, shops, restaurants, and landmarks have dwindled significantly. Consider booking a room at one of the last minute hotels London offers. They are happy to see you anytime, whether they've expected you for a month or a few hours. London weather can be iffy, but the city offers such a variety of prospects for fun, entertainment, relaxation, or education that you are assured a great time, rain or shine.

If you plan to make a day or two of it, here are suggestions for memorable moments. London's most popular attractions are among the finest of their kind in the world. If you make a last minute accommodation anywhere in town, you'll be close to fantastic opportunities.

The British Museum puts intriguing artifacts of the history of humankind at arm's and eye's length. Keep spanning the centuries by visiting the National Gallery, the Tate Modern, or the Museum of Natural History. Freebies include Soane's Museum, Kenwood House, or the Geffrye. Splurge a bit at the huge Westfield shopping centre in west London. Invigorate yourself with a stroll through Battersea Park. Catch your favorite production in West End, or take in a show you haven't seen before. Stay near all the action by securing last minute accommodation in a hotel that fits your style and budget.

Been there, done that, and desire something fresh? Right now 200 elephants are running the streets of London! Model pachyderms, splendidly decorated, are stationed all about town. Take a walking tour to see as many as possible. Along the way, pick up a few tomes at one of the cities antiquarian bookstores, and warm yourself on a chilly afternoon in a neighbourhood coffee shop like Munson's exploring your finds. Head back to your cozy room at any last minute hotels London boasts, order up room service, turn off your phone, and enjoy some R&R. Why not mix in some pleasure with the business or travel, and enjoy some autumn refreshment!
