Cat Collars - A Important Cat Accessory
By Lauren Hills Cat collars and identification are essential and by law all cats need them. Identification on cats and dogs, became law in 1999 and is used to protect the animals, people and the greater community. Identification technology has today moved away from the cat collars and tags towards micro chipping which involves the insertion of a small microchip under the animal's skin.
Many cat owners today will use micro chipping and cat collars and tags to ensure their animal is returned if it gets lost. Remember, if your cat does not have identification you may incur a fine from your local council.
As cat ownership increases so to has the popularity of cat accessories and none are more popular than the coat collars. The variety of cat collars available today is huge and shows that cat collars today have become a fashion accessory, as apposed to a form of identification (although they do that too). Cat fashion is booming and the modern cats of today can be seen sporting cat collars of all different sizes, shapes, colours, materials and additional accessories (e.g. bells). Remember, when buying your furry friend a cat collar be sure it has an elastic section so if they get caught the collar will stretch and they can escape.
Cat collars are also great if you want to train your cat to walk on a leash. Make cats today are stuck inside all day and it is a real treat if they can get out and about. Start training your cat when it is still young. Buy a special training cat collar/harness and lead. Some simple training steps include:
1. Get your cat used to the cat collars/harness and lead indoors. A cat harness is more difficult to escape from so it is important your cat gets used to wearing it.
2. Once your cat seems used to the harness attach the lead and let your cat run/walk around with the lead dragging behind. This will allow them to get used to the lead.
3. Pick up the lead and start walking with your cat. Get them used to the pull of the harness and they will slowly learn you are in control and they cannot get away. Practice walking inside where the surroundings are familiar to your cat.
4. On your first venture outdoors make sure it is a quieter time of day so that your cat is not frightened.
5. During training indoors and outdoors reward your cat for good behaviour with special cat treats.
Your cat will be walking on a lead in no time. Just remember to practice and be patient.
