March 18 Update from MUSD Superintendent

MUSD Letterhead

Update

March 18, 2020

Dear MUSD Parents and Guardians:

On behalf of the Marana Unified School District, I want to thank you for your patience and ongoing support as we collectively navigate this quickly evolving global health situation surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19). I want to assure you that the health and safety of our students, families, employees and community remain our top priority. We will continue to make every decision throughout this extraordinary period very carefully, and always with the guidance of our federal, state, and local public health and safety leaders.

As you know all MUSD schools will remain closed until at least March 27, 2020, following Governor Doug Ducey and Superintendent Hoffmann's announcement of a statewide closure of Arizona schools. This closure includes all student programs and the cancellation of all activities: preschool, before/after school care (LEAP), after-school programs, sport practices, athletic competitions, tutoring, and all extra-curricular activity programming. This also means school and District offices are not open to the public for in-person assistance.

The Marana district is continuing to work diligently to make decisions that best serve our students, employees, and community. Like you, we have many questions surrounding AzMERIT and other state-mandated academic testing, supplemental instruction, activities, and graduations, just to name a few. We are continuing to receive information from the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) regarding school closure, testing, instruction and services.

I want to assure you that our Senior Leadership and Governing Board remains vigilant and continues to monitor the situation in real time. As we await additional guidance and instruction, we continue to develop new systems and procedures to address these challenges. However, this takes time and is a very fluid situation with many unknowns. We are committed to continuing to share ongoing updates as soon as able.

March 18 Update to our Families

  • Food Service
    • Beginning Monday, March 16 and continuing through all school closure days, Marana Cares Mobile is providing to-go prepacked LUNCH service Monday-Friday. Details regarding times and locations can be found on our Marana Cares Mobile Webpage and Facebook page.
    • Knowing many of our families rely on school meals for their student, we will be offering free breakfast and lunch to all children between the ages of one and 18 on a grab & go basis while schools are closed. Starting Monday, March 23, children may stop by one of several schools for meals between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. for breakfast and 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. for lunch. Detailed information, including locations, is available on our Webpage
  • Learning Resources
    • While there will not be any direct instruction by Marana educators the week of March 23- 27, the District will provide a list of online resources for parents and families on Monday, March 23 for those families who would like their student to engage in supplemental educational online resources/activities to support student at-home learning.
    • It is the District's intent to distribute Chromebooks next week to those students who need one. As part of this planning process, it is very important we gather information regarding how many Chromebooks the District will need to issue. Please take a minute to read and complete this Chromebook Form for EACH student in your home who does NOT have access to a digital device. Please complete this form no later than Monday, March 23 at 12:00pm. For questions related to your student's Chromebook or this form, please email parents@maranausd.org.
    • Please know that we are continuing our planning efforts related to student instruction in the event of school closure beyond March 27.
  • Report Cards
    • Due to school closure, report cards will not be issued on Monday, March 23. Future updates will be provided regarding this.
  • Communications
    • It is worth repeating that this situation is continuously changing and we will continue to share updates and resources as more information becomes available. Information will be shared on our coronavirus Webpage at maranausd.org/coronavirus; via email, telephone, and/or text; and social media channels at https://www.facebook.com/maranaschools/ and https://twitter.com/MaranaSchools. We have also posted resources on our Webpage to assist in talking with children about coronavirus.
  • Prevention
    • Please continue to follow the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and public health experts regarding social distancing and avoiding crowds, keeping in mind that that guidance may also change and evolve over time. For the latest updates on COVID-19 in Arizona, please visit http://www.azdhs.gov. Also, please continue to follow CDC measures to help prevent the spread of flu, common cold and the spread of coronaviruses:
      • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
      • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
      • Cover your cough or sneeze, then immediately discard any tissues and wash your hands.
      • Clean frequently touched surfaces and objects.
      • Stay home when sick. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
      • Stop shaking hands. Greet each other in a different way.
      • Practice "social distancing" by limiting social interactions.

We will provide the next update Monday, March 23, 2020.

Thank you again for your support as we continue to focus on the needs of our students, families, employees, and community during this unprecedented time. We miss our students and our families and look forward to the time when we can open our schools and welcome you back. Until then, please take care of yourselves, your loved ones, and others in need.

Sincerely,

Doug Wilson, Ed.D.
Superintendent
