Important: Special Education Services

Please complete Form: MUSD Special Education Services

MUSD Logo

Important Form to Complete: Please click here to complete the REQUIRED FORM to acknowledge the information and provide consent for your child to interact with school staff during the current school closure through the use of virtual platforms, including participation in small group meetings.

Important Information: During the current school closure that has resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic, Marana Unified School District (MUSD) staff members are creatively trying to provide special education services for our students.

MUSD's plan is to provide many special education services through the use of ZOOM or other virtual formats. Given the present circumstances, the use of this type of face-to-face platform may be the best way for our special education teachers, speech language therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and other service providers to provide services to your son or daughter.

Although some special education services are provided on an individual, one-to-one basis, many others are delivered to small groups of students. We need to continue to meet with students in small groups and, as a practical matter given the school closure, these meetings will need to occur using a virtual format. Although we will ask all families to be sensitive to confidentiality issues, we cannot eliminate the possibility that your child's participation in one of these virtual group meetings could be viewed or overheard by another student's family member or other person in their home.

Mountain Lion Monday

Good evening Mountain Lion family,

The news came out today regarding school closures through the end of the school year. Although many felt that announcement was coming, it was still hard for us to hear. We all entered the field of education because we wanted to work with kids, watch them grow and develop and prepare them for the rest of their lives. We all care deeply and miss our students – our campus is very quiet and we are saddened not having our students on campus with us.

Today we began rolling out online/digital/virtual learning opportunities. This will look different for some of your classes but know that our teachers are committed to provide meaningful lessons for our students. As I walked across campus this morning we saw some of our teachers interacting with students on Zoom, while others were using other media to connect with their kids. This is far from perfect and not how we envisioned our fourth quarter to look like. Our teachers will continue to push out lessons and be available for questions and concerns during their "office hours." We are grateful for your understanding and support. As we learn more and have more information to share with you we will do so. There are a lot of questions about Prom, Graduation, Promotion – the things that mark big changes and transitions in our students lives. We hope to have a better idea on what those might look like later this week. It is heartbreaking for our Class of 2020 and know that we feel their pain about all of this.

Below is some information from our counseling department and our college and career offices.

Counseling

Please see the attached flyer with school closure information from the Counseling Department. In addition, we wanted to provide you with some resources during this stressful time. Please see below and the attached documents.

Mountain View High School Counseling Department is aware that the current situation in regards to the coronavirus can increase feelings of stress and anxiety for our Mountain View families. In response to this and in an effort to help our students and families manage their emotions, we want to provide some helpful strategies and resources. These resources are attached and below and also available in your student's graduating class google classroom.

Here are some helpful strategies:

  1. Deep breathing exercises. Deep breathing lowers your heart rate and blood pressure helping you relax and relieve stress.
  2. Listen to calming music.
  3. Get plenty of sleep. Lack of sleep negatively affects our ability to regulate emotions and think clearly.
  4. Do something you enjoy- Read a book, write poetry, draw, etc.
  5. Do progressive muscle relaxation. Progressive muscle relaxation is a technique that involves slowly tensing then releasing each muscle group in the body. It can help relieve the physical effects of stress and anxiety.
  6. Go for a walk, even if it's just around the block or in your own yard. It can help break the tension and give you a chance to think things through.
  7. Try a quick meditation, imagery, or grounding exercise. These can elicit the relaxation response, which is opposite to the body's stress response.
  8. Talk to someone about your thoughts and feelings. Expressing your worries to someone willing to listen can help you cope with them.
  9. Work out or do something active. Exercise is a great antidote for stress.

Please make sure with all of these strategies, you practice recommended CDC precautionary protocols.

Important from MUSD Superintendent

MUSD Letterhead

Monday, March 30, 2020

Dear MUSD Parents, Guardians, Students and Employees:

First, I hope this communication finds you and all of your family members healthy and well. Over these past weeks, we have seen our world, country, and community affected in a way that none of us have ever experienced. We have felt a wide range of emotions as we watch the news and continue to hear of the challenges and losses around the world. The response to this crisis has been extraordinary. Our thoughts go out to those who are affected, directly or indirectly, by the coronavirus. For those who are ill, our hearts are with them and we thank all of those who are working in various roles to keep essential services available.

Second, I am writing to share very important news. Governor Doug Ducey and Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman today announced the extension of Arizona school closures through the end of the school year. The extension follows updated guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and an announcement from the White House extending physical distancing guidelines until April 30, 2020.

So much remains fluid in these unprecedented times. On Tuesday, March 31, 2020, the State Board of Education is holding a special meeting to open emergency rulemaking in regards to high school graduation, A-F letter grades, and several other details related to school closures. We will share information with you as soon as we receive additional guidance from the State Board of Education regarding these important items.

While we were beginning to plan and prepare in the event of a long-term extension of school closures, the physical closing of our schools and district offices for the remainder of the year is difficult for all of us to process. Please know that we are committed to preparing our students academically. The tireless efforts of teachers, staff, and leaders these past weeks allow us to begin our Learning at Home program today. As we transition from the classroom to home, we do so with the commitment to stay connected and to ensuring that the needs of our students and families are met to the best of our ability. We will share updates as our Learning at Home program adapts to meet the needs of the remainder of the school year.

We know this announcement creates a range of emotions for you, as well as additional questions regarding what the rest of the school year will look like. As a result of today's announcement, it saddens us to share that all school and district events and activities, musical/dance/drama performances, sport practices, athletics, trips, and all other organized events are cancelled for the remainder of the year. We are also heartbroken knowing this will mean the canceling of prom, promotions, end of year celebrations, and our public graduation ceremonies. I want to stress that we are working to find alternative ways to celebrate and acknowledge these important milestones for our students and we will continue to share information in the days ahead. While much remains uncertain right now, one thing is for sure: we are seeking out new ways to stay connected and together, we will get through this.

We have a remarkable family in MUSD, and together we are working to support our students and families whether through Grab & Go meal distribution, childcare program for First Responders and Essential Healthcare Workers, Learning at Home, counseling and social work resources, and school and district operations, logistical and infrastructure services.

On behalf of the Governing Board, District Leadership, and myself, I extend my deepest appreciation to each of you – our employees, our students, and our families. Please continue to check your email, visit our coronavirus Webpage, our #maranaschool Facebook and Twitter, and our Mobile App for the latest information. We commit to staying connected as we persevere through this unprecedented time.

Stay healthy and stay connected,

Doug Wilson, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Online Distance Learning

Message From: Niki Melchiori

Hello-

Beginning Monday, March30, Mountain View teachers will post online lessons in google classrooms and/or invites to office hours, Google Hangouts and/or Zoom meetings.  Learning for the week will be posted by 8:00am on Monday and these will be the assignments for the week.  In my first posting, I’ll share the plan for learning remotely, and my plans for providing feedback and support. Some learning and ideas for getting started will also be included. Tomorrow and Tuesday, I will host open Office Hours most of the day. I would love for you (the student) to check in with me on Monday or Tuesday.    Remote meeting and learning is new to all of us.

I will send you an invitation for Zoom and You can then join office hours with me, and maybe a few other students at the scheduled time. If you are unsure about how to set up or access this platform, please let me know and I will support you through the setup through an email. During office hours, I can answer questions and give you guidance on our next steps.  If you have concerns about meeting the learning and work expectations for the Physical Education classes, I believe that once you are informed, you will feel confident that the requirements are very reasonable for the circumstances.

I hope to talk with all of you tomorrow  or Tuesday. If you can’t make it to an office hour, rest assured that when the assignments for the Physical Education class is uploaded on Monday most all of your questions will be answered.

Take care and looking forward to hearing from you-

Ms. Melchiori

Learning at Home

Message From: Deena Sissener

Happy Friday Mountain Lion Parents and Guardians!

I hope you’re all staying healthy, both physically and mentally.

Next week, we will begin our journey through distance learning. Every Monday, I will post all of the assignments for the week by 8:00 am on Google Classroom. My goal is to give students engaging material to keep learning alive without overwhelming them. I will also be sending out my weekly summaries every Monday and including the PowerPoint presentation that students will be getting. This way, everyone is on the same page. During this time, students are also encouraged to work on any late or missing assignments from last quarter.

My “office hours” will be every Monday at 8:00am, 11:00am, and 2:00 pm per school policy, but students can reach out to me using the Remind app or their gmail account at any time.

I know that this is new for all of us, so please reach out to me at any point if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you so much for your time. I look forward to connecting with classes next week!

Sincerely,

Deena Sissener

Important: Learning at Home Begins Monday

Learning at Home logo

Learning at Home

During the week of March 23, Marana Unified School District (MUSD) leaders, educators, and staff met regularly as they collaborated, prepared, and planned for the implementation of "learning at home". Teachers, staff, social workers/counselors, and school and District leaders have connected with students and families, distributed Chromebooks, implemented a Free Grab & Go meal program, organized child care for first responders/essential healthcare workers, and provided online learning resources/activities for students and families to engage in.

Beginning Monday, March 30, 2020, through school closure, learning at home officially begins in the Marana Unified School District, as required in HB 2910. Visit the District's Learning at Home Webpage for important information and details.

Aligned with the District's Five Commitments, MUSD continues its commitment to their students as learning transitions from the school classroom to the home:

Strong Relationships:

  • It is important during school closure that MUSD continues to build relationships and have individual personal connections between stakeholders at all levels (minimally once a week) using virtual and telephonic tools.

Collaboration

  • It is important that MUSD work together to do their best for students, their families, our staff, and the community.

Equity, Innovation, and Deeper Learning

  • MUSD's collective work will look different and perfectly imperfect moving forward. The District recognizes that their community is in crisis and students need their basic needs met first.

Learning at Home & Staying Connected

The Marana Unified School District is committed to providing not only learning at home during school closure, but also ensuring that educators, staff, and leaders stay connected with students and families. MUSD misses their students and families. Working together, we will stay connected! #MUSDstaysConnected

How will my student learn at home?

MUSD's intent is not to recreate the entire schooling experience; rather provide general educational learning opportunities for students at home utilizing technological resources or to provide alternatives if students cannot access technology and/or students have alternative learning needs. Families, teachers, and schools will work together to address individual needs and make applicable arrangements.

During school closure, teachers will provide:

  • opportunities for students to explore content,
  • expose students to remaining priority standards,
  • help students fill gaps and move forward.

General educational learning opportunities will:

  • be age-appropriate and connected to grade-level content,
  • be meaningful/engaging,
  • provide opportunities for teachers to give students feedback.

Teachers will connect with their students and parents/guardians utilizing a variety of tools:

  • Phone calls and emails.
  • Virtual or telephonic office hours to support individual or small groups of students. This can be done in a zoom personal room or having parents email during designated time windows and teachers returning the call.
  • Additional applications teachers and staff currently use to connect with families: Class Dojo, Synergy, Remind, Bloomz, etc.
  • Alternative learning opportunities will be made for those students unable to participate in online learning at home.

MUSD recognizes that it will take time for students and teachers to adjust to learning at home and will differentiate learning opportunities to meet the needs of their students.

During this challenging and difficult time for families, the District encourages a healthy balance between online and offline learning, reading books, physical activities, creative time, downtime, etc. What is most important for MUSD is to support families and for students to feel comforted and loved.

Visit the District's Learning at Home Webpage for more important information and details.

A Community of Empowered, Innovative and Engaged Citizens
MVHS logo vision
Mountain Lion Message

marquee

Good afternoon Mountain Lion families,

We hope that everyone is doing well and has been able to remain safe with their family during these unprecedented times. I wanted to share a few things with you as we head towards the end of our extended spring break window.

First, you will be receiving a phone call from your students' Summit teacher. The calls will either come from their office/school phone or from a blocked number if they are using their home or cell phones. Our biggest concern is our students and we want to reach out and check on them. In speaking to many of our teachers yesterday and today they truly miss their students.

Second, our counseling department will be in touch with our students. They will start with our senior class and work their way through their case load. If you need anything please share that with your counselor or with us at school and we can connect you with the appropriate people that can provide support.

Third, Grab and Go Meals will be available for all students under age 18 and can be picked up between 10:30 am – 12:30 pm at all Marana Unified School District elementary schools. Students need to be present to collect their meals. The meals will be delivered to your car.

The plan moving forward is to provide general educational opportunities for our students. This will begin on Monday and we ask that our students keep an eye out on their Google Classrooms for more information. We also ask that they check their Gmail account for messages from their teachers over the next few days. And, as parents, please use the district website to access more information regarding our schools and COVID-19.

Finally, know that this that is a very fluid situation. We are awaiting word from the Governor and the Arizona State Board of Education. Their messages will help us in preparing the appropriate learning opportunities and will give more information regarding school openings/further closures.

Thank you and take care of your family.

UPDATE from Superintendent

MUSD Letterhead

March 23, 2020

Dear MUSD Parents/Guardians,

During this time of uncertainty, we appreciate your ongoing support, trust, and patience as we continue to monitor and adapt to the circumstances surrounding the coronavirus. Our thoughts are with you and our students as this unprecedented health crisis affects all of our lives, families, and communities.

Below please find a variety of important updates. Please also know that we will continue to share information in the upcoming days and weeks as more guidance is provided from the State and additional details are determined.

Online Learning Resources

While there is no direct instruction by Marana educators this school week, families can engage students in a variety of supplementary educational online resources/activities to support student at-home learning.

As promised, please click here for educational online resources/activities and contact information regarding technical and parent support.

This is not a comprehensive list, but rather a starting place for students to engage in some educational experiences. Some of these sites will be familiar to students as they are currently using them in their classrooms.

We have also included some additional links that will take students on a virtual tour of museums, National Parks, and other fun educational interactive sites.

It is not necessary to have students complete everything on this list, but rather a way to experience some learning and exploration online throughout their day. Remember that there should be a healthy balance between online and offline learning, reading books, physical activities, creative time, downtime, etc. What is most important during this time is for our students to feel comforted and loved.

Please know that we are continuing our planning efforts related to the general educational opportunities students will have next week.

EXPANDING! FREE Grab & Go Meals & Marana Cares Mobile: More Locations, New Time, New Service begins Wednesday March 25

No need to park! Pull up to the front of the school and an employee will hand you a student Chromebook and a list of resources related to Wi-Fi access. Your student does not need to be present.

Please remember our new Grab & Go meal time begins on Wednesday between 10:30am - 12:30pm. If you are unable to arrive during this time, please call your student's school office to make individual Chromebook grab & go arrangements.

If you have not yet completed the form and are in need of a Chromebook, please complete the Chromebook Form as soon as possible so that we can ensure enough Chromebooks are available for distribution.

For questions related to your student's Chromebook or this form, please email parents@maranausd.org.

MUSD Questionnaire - Childcare for Essential Workers

Our District is in the planning stages regarding the provision of child care for Essential Workers (first responders, essential healthcare workers, and military personnel), as aligned with the Governor's request. If you fit within the essential worker category and are in need of childcare during school closure, please take a minute to complete this Childcare Questionnaire Form by noon on Wednesday, March 25. This information will help the Marana district determine the feasibility of opening and providing Learning, Enrichment and Play (LEAP) services on a limited basis. The District will continue to share more information regarding this in the near future.

I encourage you to continue to visit the District Website coronavirus webpage at www.maranausd.org/coronavirus, #maranaschools Facebook and Twitter, and download our Mobile App to stay current on all school closure information, Grab & Go Meals, resources, and updates.

We are confident that we will get through this together. Please continue to take care of your student, your family, and yourself.

Warm Regards,

Doug Wilson, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Mountain Lion Monday

Good evening Mountain Lion families.

As we work to identify and find our new normal I wanted to reach out and say hello and that all of us at Mountain View miss you very much. The past week has been unprecedented in many ways and each of us are trying to find out how we can best manage all that is happening and how we can adjust our lives to what is taking place.

The district is working very hard and will be sharing more information with our families as they have information to share. As we keep hearing, this is a very fluid process. I feel like I hear inspirational or motivational quotes just in time for the Mountain Lion Monday and I heard this quote today – "You are Braver than you Believe, Stronger than you Seem and Smarter than you Think…" – Winnie the Pooh

We do hope to see all of our students again soon. Though we do not know what the next weeks will look like nor can we predict the future, we do hope that we can again have our students back at school and continue to learn and grow together.

Be safe. Thank you.
