Try These Tricks the Next Time Your Head Hurts

You can't always stop the neighbors from blasting their music or your boss from dropping a project on you five minutes before you're headed out for vacation. But you might be able to stop the headaches that can be triggered by overloads of stress. What to do:

Strengthen your neck. Seriously. Headache pain can come from weakness or spasms of the neck muscles. Pain travels from your upper back and goes to your lower neck, then your upper neck, as progressively weak muscles compensate for too much computer or Texas Hold 'em time. If muscles in your upper back are sore, your trapezius muscles may be weak. First, get rid of the headache. Then work on strengthening that area. It takes only about five minutes, three times a week.

Pull the trigger. Some foods and ingredients -- including caffeine, cheese, smoked meats, sugar, chocolate and foods containing MSG -- are known to trigger migraines in susceptible people. If you regularly indulge in any of these foods, eliminate them one at a time and see if you can finger the culprit. (Honestly though, you should be taking it easy on most of these anyway.)

Sweat it out. Regular aerobic exercise means you'll have fewer regular headaches. How? It helps relieve stress and increases the levels of painkilling endorphins in your system. Similarly, yoga, stretching and meditation also help reduce tension and thus relax the chemical cascade that can cause headaches.

Go to bed. With your significant other. Orgasms often stop headaches.
