Lost in Translation

Brenda Williams

I'll never forget this one time that I was driving. I was heading off to run an errand and it was really bright outside. While I was driving down the street, there was no one behind me, so I slowed down a bit so that I could readjust my visors in my car to help block the sun. Well, while I was doing that, there was a car that was waiting to turn onto the roadway that I was on. I guess that the motion of my hands trying to fix the visors looked like I was waving on the other driver to go ahead, so go ahead they did. At first I was baffled. I wondered why that person would suddenly turn out in front of me when they could have just as easily waited for me to pass. That's when I noticed the driver giving me a little 'thank you' wave. What had I done? That's when it all made sense.

If you are the kind of person who likes to use your hands a lot while you are talking, then you probably need to learn how to control yourself a little better when you are in the car and driving, because apparently these mixed messages really confuse drivers and pedestrians. I have witnessed other drivers who have yielded to pedestrians, waving the pedestrian to walk across the street. However, what that driver doesn't realize is that he or she is not a crossing guard. There are several other lanes of traffic which have, in fact, not stopped for that particular pedestrian. Therefore, if the pedestrian is smart, they will usually not cross the street. Confused and a bit miffed at the snub, the driver will proceed on, never realizing all the while that the traffic around them had not stopped to allow the pedestrian to cross.

There are also instances where a pedestrian will make eye contact with a driver where it looks like the driver is waving him or her on. However, the driver is distracted or talking to someone else and is not really paying attention to the pedestrian. This is a dangerous situation to be in because the pedestrian will then think that it is ok for them to cross the street when, in fact, it is not safe for them to do so. When in doubt, it is always best to play it safe. If you are unsure of the direction that the driver is giving you or if you think that the driver is not paying attention to you, stay where you are. It is important for pedestrians of all sorts to remember that even though you may have the right of way, a vehicle is much more powerful and heavy than you are.

The main thing to remember when you are driving is that you have to be cautious of the mixed signals that you may or may not unintentionally be sending to other drivers and/or pedestrians. While it may be nearly impossible for some of us not to gesticulate while having an animated conversation, it is even more important to remember that you need to pay attention to the reactions of other drivers and people around you.
