Q&A: Orchids in Greenhouse Question: I have several orchids in the greenhouse attached to my home. The greenhouse gets afternoon sun from 1pm until 5 pm. Is this too much sun for the orchids now that it is springtime? How should I protect the orchids in summer? They are doing well and have flowered over the winter. Answer: Since the sun is strongest in the afternoon hours, I recommend providing some partial shade to your orchids. If you have taller potted plants, like palms, bamboo, or ficus, the orchids will appreciate the dappled shade they would provide from the hot sun. You can also use a light shade cloth over the section of the greenhouse where the orchids live. |

Q&A: Is The Victory Pyracantha Poisonous To My Dogs? Question: I have two small dogs who love to chew. Do I need to be concerned about them ingesting berries, fruit, flowers, greens....anything from the Victory Pyracantha? Is this type of plant toxic to dogs? Thank you!! Answer: Although I have not found pyracantha listed in the common toxic plants lists, (It is related to the apple so this is not so surprising.) it is never a good idea to allow pets to develop the habit of chewing on plants because so many of the common plants are in fact toxic. (It also does the plant no good.) You might want to check with your vet as to plant toxicity and training tips on keeping them from nibbling. It could save their lives. Good luck!!! |

Tip: Control Spider Mites Spider mites plague houseplants such as croton and cyclamen in winter. Mites are barely visible but create webbing when numerous. Spray plants with insecticidal soap 2 to 3 times a week and mist a few times to keep them away. |
