Q&A: Sprinkers or Drip in the Vegetable Garden Question: Is it okay to use overhead sprinklers in a vegetable garden? I've seen hundreds of farms using gigantic sprinkler systems to water their crops, so I assume it's a sound practice. Answer: You can water most plants with overhead sprinklers, and farmers often have no other choice. But drip watering is the better choice. The main concern with overhead watering is disease. Splashing water or wet leaves are what many plant diseases need to spread. Sprinkling is also wasteful, since so much water is lost to evaporation. Drip watering systems deliver water exactly where it's needed: the soil at the base of the plant. The water is applied slowly and is able to soak in. Leaves stay dry, limiting disease problems. |

Q&A: Mixing Annuals with Perennials Question: I have a bed of iceland poppies in my front yard. Since they only bloom for a few weeks, I'd like to add some complementary annuals that would bloom throughout the summer. Do you have any suggestions? Answer: It's a great idea to add some long-flowering annuals to perennial beds. There are many, many annuals to choose from. Summer-flowering annuals include zinnia, cosmos, coreopsis, geraniums, marigolds, and petunias. Snapdragons and pansies like the cool weather of spring and fall. Asters and chrysanthemums are classic fall flowers. Hope this helps! |

Tip: Use Heat Mats for Seeds The best soil temperature for most seeds is in the 70Fs. Use heat mats to keep the seed starting soil warm. These electrical devices are placed under the seed-starting trays and keep the soil consistently warm while the seeds germinate. |
