An Initial Response

Andy Seamans

An Initial Response

Questions:

Orleans, Vt., Answer Man-er (Rev.) W. Norman MacFarlane says we haven't had a quiz recently with a theme of noted initials used to describe places and events. What's your "initial" response?

We may have had some queries from MacFarlane that were used in prior columns, but that has been done before to quiz Answer Man-ers.

1. What if you're seen on Broadway facing a sign labeled as SRO? What will it say to you?

2. You may have heard of an event involving a military action known as a SAM assault. What is it?

3. What's going on when you hear of a SWAT system being used?

4. Where will you witness action by the RCMP?

5. What's significant in a waterway where you would see the initials HMS on a vessel or sea craft?

6. It is quite a pain sometimes when you receive some government literature bearing the letters DMV. What does DMV stand for?

7. The OSS was an early agency used as a form of intelligence by the federal government. Spell out the name of the agency. What president established it, and in what year?

8. Name the operation that replaced the OSS. What president established this replacement department?

9. The U.S. Air forces in WWII established the SAC. What does this military operation stand for? What movie star helped with SAC, starring in a post-WWII motion picture bearing the operation's name?

10. The number of WAC forces in WWII was 150,000. What was this force?
