Eat To Feel Great By Michael Roizen, M.D., and Mehmet Oz, M.D. How do you go from "I feel heavy and draggy," to "I'm at my ideal weight -- want to come to the gym with me"? Simply rebalance your food portfolio. Just like balancing a financial portfolio (but easier than if yours went awry in 2008), it means loading up on the great performers and ditching the foods that do nothing. (And unlike financial changes, with this move, past performance is a guarantee of future success). First, fill your body with the nutrient-dense foods it really wants: 100 percent whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and healthy fats. Then, drop the poor performers -- the nutrient-vacant foods you eat too often. For most people, those are refined breads, pasta, rice and other heavily processed grain products. Replace them with 100 percent whole-grain alternatives. But remember that you want to go for balance. Routinely eating a big plate of whole-grain pasta with a couple of slices of whole-grain bread means you're overloading on grains and neglecting other groups. Diversify your meal by deselecting the pasta mountain. Instead, put a modest amount of it on your plate and add generous helpings of tomatoes, spinach, pine nuts or whichever flavorful vegetables, legumes and nuts you want. Fill in any dietary holes at snack time: If you're short on dairy, enjoy a cup of low-fat, no-sugar-added yogurt. If it's protein you need, grab a handful of nuts or soybeans (edamame). Raw vegetables and fruit are always wise and satisfying choices. ======== The YOU Docs, Mehmet Oz and Mike Roizen, are authors of "YOU: Having a Baby." Want more?
