Cats Need Somewhere to Scratch, So Give Them a Place to Do Their Scratching By Greg Parsons Scratching is one of the most important activities in the life of a cat. Your cat needs to scratch, and you will have to provide him a place to dig in with his claws. What you will need is a scratching post, a cat tree, or any other scratching toy that will substitute for your cat scratching your couch. If you plan to have any success in getting your cat to scratch where you want him to, you will need to choose a scratching place that your pet can really dig into, and is made from a material that is very sturdy. It needs to be sturdy and stable, because the first time a scratching post collapses on top of your cat is the last time he will ever use it. Scratching posts are usually vertical, tall posts or logs that are attached to a wide base for stability. One material that works well for the scratching surface of the post is sisal, which is a tough rope-like material. It is usually wrapped around the post for scratching access. One of the best things you can get for your cat's enjoyment is a cat tree that has a perch on top. Cats love to look down on everything, because doing so reinforces their belief of their superiority. A cat tree also offers a place for those moments when they do not want to be bothered with anyone or anything. Some cat trees come with toys that hang down, or you can add your own. Make sure that is attached or added is safe for your cat, and can not be swallowed, such as strings or sequins. If you are a little bit handy, you can even make a cat tree yourself by using scrap lumber and carpet remnants. You can find do-it-yourself plans online or at the library. A scratching post, cat tree, or any other scratching toy is an important part of keeping your cat happy with scratching, but keeping him away from exercising those habits on your furniture. ======== Greg has been writing articles for over 4 years.
