Falcon Family Flyer Aug 25th

FALCON FAMILY FLYER

Greetings Falcon Families,

PRIDE:

We are very PROUD of the students who campaigned for represent their fellow students as a member of our Fabulous Student Council! These students showed the importance of stepping up as leaders!

RESPECT:

Students are showing us each day that they RESPECT their teachers, each other and the rules of our school. We have had a wonderful two weeks of school!

RESPONSIBILITY:

Students are encouraged to take RESPONSIBILITY for their learning and take advantage of after school tutoring. Students should talk to their teacher if they would like to attend.

NO SCHOOL SEPT 1st and Sept 4th

All MUSD schools will be closed on September 1st for our annual Professional Development Day. We will also be closed on September 4th in observance of Labor Day. Enjoy the four-day weekend with your family!

ELECTRONIC GRADE REPORTS

Our school strives to ensure that parents receive important information in a timely, efficient, and cost-effective manner. To that end, we are excited to announce the expansion of the Report Card feature within MUSD Connection, the District's secure Web-based tool, providing parents and students the ability to view student information such as class assignments, grades, course history, attendance, and health information from the convenience of any computer or mobile device, 24-hours a day.

This Report Card feature now provides the ability to view and print your child's K-12 grade Report Card/7-12 grade Progress Report instantaneously! This means, timely notification regarding your child's academic progress and no more waiting for the mail. Not to mention, the cost-savings associated with reduced printing and mailing expenses, so that more dollars can be directed to your child's classroom.

I have attached a letter with all of the pertinent information regarding the electronic grade reports and who to contact if you need assistance.

CHROMEBOOKS

Chromebooks and Student Safety:

During the first two weeks of school, your student participated in a digital citizenship curriculum. The purpose of these lessons is to encourage safe behaviors online and ensure they understand the permanent nature of online contents. Now that these lessons have been covered, students will have access to filtered internet and webcams.

While our intent is to make Internet access available to further educational goals and objectives, students may find ways to access other materials as well. Web filtering is in place, but no filtering system is capable of blocking 100% of inappropriate material. Families should be warned that some material accessible via the Internet might contain items that are illegal, defamatory, inaccurate or potentially offensive to some people.

The safety of our students is a priority for the Marana Unified School District. To this end, we have partnered with two companies, Securly and Gaggle, to support student online safety directly associated with student use of Chromebook mobile devices.

Gaggle, a company that provides safety management services for educational organizations.  It is a service that is enabled 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, no matter the location of your child's Chromebook.  Their ultimate mission is to help protect the emotional and physical safety of your child, via the monitoring of all students' email messages, as well as all content found in Google Drive.

Securly also helps keep students safe while using their school-issued devices.  Securly is a filtering service that is enabled 24/7 days per week, no matter the location of your child's Chromebook. A feature they provide is their parent portal, which will allow you to understand and participate in your child's online experience.  No more wondering what your children are accessing – you can see for yourself.

Starting the week of August 23, 2017, you will receive a weekly email from Securly.com that will show you a preview of your child's online activity.  If you prefer that we do not share your email address you provided, you can simply contact engage.parents@maranausd.org.  When looking for the Securly email, make sure you check your Spam or Junk folders to make sure the emails do not get caught in your filtering systems.

It is important to the Marana Unified School District to partner with parents to maintain a safe environment for students when using their Chromebook devices for educational purposes. More information will be coming soon regarding Parent University Classes that will be provided on how to set up a Parent Portal account.

If you have any further questions, please contact engage.parents@maranausd.org.

STUDENT AFTER SCHOOL PICK-UP

Parents, please always pick up your child in the front of the school after school.  There is always a lot of bus and general traffic by the gym area after school. We do not want students crossing the parking lots at that time.

TUTORING AND GOAL

Students who stay after school for tutoring must remain in the tutoring classroom until they are picked up by a parent/guardian or get on the activity bus.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER:

Please call our office if you ever have any questions or concerns that need to be addressed. In addition to individual meetings with students, counseling lessons and coordinating 504 plans, the Marana Middle School Counseling Department offers a variety of counseling groups to our students. Based on interest and availability of facilitators, we offer the following groups throughout the school year:

Anxiety, Conflict Resolution, Healthy Teen Relationships, Self-Esteem, Motivation, Incarcerated Parents/Living with Grandparents, Grief & Loss and Sharing.

If you are interested in having your student in a group, please call or email our office so we can get a permission slip to you. In addition, your student may be bringing home a permission slip. Please make sure it gets signed and brought back to the counseling office. If you have further questions about these groups, please contact our Counseling Secretary, Mrs. Carol Bennett, at 520-682-1715.
