Falcon Family Flyer

FALCON FAMILY FLYER

Greetings Falcon Families,

PRIDE:

We are very PROUD of our athletic program! We officially started games this week and the experience has been amazing for our students. A big SHOUT OUT to Mr. Tinghitella and Sue Miller for scheduling so many games and making MMS the envy of the league with our high participation numbers!

RESPECT:

I would like to highlight the RESPECT we all have for our parent community. Today, we had our first WATCH D.O.G.S. volunteer! It is wonderful to have dads join us on campus, making connections with our students. Thank you Mr. Kornacki for heading up this valuable program.

RESPONSIBILITY:

Our staff know that it is our RESPONSIBILITY to continue to learn and adopt a "GROWTH MINDSET"….just like our kids. We will be coming together with other teachers from across our district tomorrow in an effort to continually grow in our profession.

NO SCHOOL SEPT 1st and Sept 4th

All MUSD schools will be closed on September 1st for our annual Professional Development Day. We will also be closed on September 4th in observance of Labor Day. Enjoy the four-day weekend with your family!

ELECTRONIC GRADE REPORTS

Our school strives to ensure that parents receive important information in a timely, efficient, and cost-effective manner. To that end, we are excited to announce the expansion of the Report Card feature within MUSD Connection, the District's secure Web-based tool, providing parents and students the ability to view student information such as class assignments, grades, course history, attendance, and health information from the convenience of any computer or mobile device, 24-hours a day.

This Report Card feature now provides the ability to view and print your child's K-12 grade Report Card/7-12 grade Progress Report instantaneously! This means, timely notification regarding your child's academic progress and no more waiting for the mail. Not to mention, the cost-savings associated with reduced printing and mailing expenses, so that more dollars can be directed to your child's classroom.

Not yet connected? It's easy and fast. Simply contact our Registrar, Emily Sosinski at 682-3102 to receive your secure MUSD Connection User Activation Key.

TUTORING AND GOAL

Students who stay after school for tutoring must remain in the tutoring classroom until they are picked up by a parent/guardian or get on the activity bus.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER:

Please call our office if you ever have any questions or concerns that need to be addressed. In addition to individual meetings with students, counseling lessons and coordinating 504 plans, the Marana Middle School Counseling Department offers a variety of counseling groups to our students. Our groups usually run for 7-9 weeks and our first set of groups will be starting August 21st. Based on interest and availability of facilitators, we offer the following groups throughout the school year:

Anxiety, Conflict Resolution, Healthy Teen Relationships, Self-Esteem, Motivation, Incarcerated Parents/Living with Grandparents, Grief & Loss and Sharing.

If you are interested in having your student in a group, please call or email our office so we can get a permission slip to you. In addition, your student may be bringing home a permission slip. Please make sure it gets signed and brought back to the counseling office. If you have further questions about these groups, please contact our Counseling Secretary, Mrs. Carol Bennett, at 520-682-1715.

ATHLETICS:

The Falcon Athletic Department has been working diligently with other schools to secure as many games as possible for our student athletes.  Falcon athletics is flourishing with 14 teams overall.  Our mission of providing a positive experience for all athletes is facilitated by securing as much game time as possible for the players.  Our coaches are putting in long hours preparing our Falcons to be ready for any adversity they may encounter.  The athletes are making us proud as they win (and possibly lose) with class.  We greatly appreciate the positive comments and the amount of support the parents are showing by the large crowds cheering our Falcons on to victory.  Falcon athletes are flying high!!!

Check our website for all of the most-timely information about upcoming events and activities.  Please contact us with any questions you may have.

Your Partner in Education,

Ms. Dickson – Principal

Physical Education: Good morning parents...

Progress report grades are posted.  What you see in your child's grade book as of today represents their progress report.  By the time progress report grades are actually due, their grade will have already changed as there are two assignments posted today and due that will be entered early next week.
Students are expected to complete a reflection and a quiz by the end of today.  Both were loaded into their google classroom this afternoon and should be submitted by the end of the school day.  Please remind your student to do their assignment and we will remind them, as well!
Have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend, all!

Physical Education: Good morning parents...

Grades have just been updated.  Here is the information you need to understand your student's grade:
1.  Students who took the pre-test earned 100%.  The pre-test was in for 8 days.  Students were reminded to complete this in google classroom.  If your student has a 0 for the pre-test they elected not to take it.
2. Reflection scores for Friday are in.  If your student was absent Friday, the assignment will remain in their google classroom until the end of the day on Monday and can be completed for full credit.  If it is not completed, the score that is currently showing will remain.  Students who do not complete the reflection earn a 50% (less 10% for each day missed).  A 10% deduction for each day missed is reflected in the score currently showing in synergy.  Students who wish to make up missed days can email Mrs. Corner for a link to the make-up options.
3. Course policies were due by Friday for full credit.  All course policies submitted by the end of the school day Friday have been entered.
I asked all students to speak with me, on Friday, if they believed there was an error with their grade.  I made all corrections for students who approached me at that time.  Please encourage your student to speak to me, or email me (from their chrome book), if they believe there is an error in their grade from the 8/25 reflection or the quiz.  These are the only two new grades entered since Friday.
There will be two assignments this week:  a reflection and a quiz.  The quiz this week will be scored based on accuracy.  The quiz is one question.  It is worth 5 points.  A practice quiz can be found in google classroom.  This practice quiz contains the one question students need to know for this week's quiz.  It can be taken an infinite number of times.  It will show students their score and the correct answer.  I would advise students to take advantage of the practice quiz that is available tonight through Wednesday.  The quiz and reflection will be available on Thursday.
Thank you!

Falcon Family Flyer Aug 25th

FALCON FAMILY FLYER

Greetings Falcon Families,

PRIDE:

We are very PROUD of the students who campaigned for represent their fellow students as a member of our Fabulous Student Council! These students showed the importance of stepping up as leaders!

RESPECT:

Students are showing us each day that they RESPECT their teachers, each other and the rules of our school. We have had a wonderful two weeks of school!

RESPONSIBILITY:

Students are encouraged to take RESPONSIBILITY for their learning and take advantage of after school tutoring. Students should talk to their teacher if they would like to attend.

I have attached a letter with all of the pertinent information regarding the electronic grade reports and who to contact if you need assistance.

CHROMEBOOKS

Chromebooks and Student Safety:

During the first two weeks of school, your student participated in a digital citizenship curriculum. The purpose of these lessons is to encourage safe behaviors online and ensure they understand the permanent nature of online contents. Now that these lessons have been covered, students will have access to filtered internet and webcams.

While our intent is to make Internet access available to further educational goals and objectives, students may find ways to access other materials as well. Web filtering is in place, but no filtering system is capable of blocking 100% of inappropriate material. Families should be warned that some material accessible via the Internet might contain items that are illegal, defamatory, inaccurate or potentially offensive to some people.

The safety of our students is a priority for the Marana Unified School District. To this end, we have partnered with two companies, Securly and Gaggle, to support student online safety directly associated with student use of Chromebook mobile devices.

Gaggle, a company that provides safety management services for educational organizations.  It is a service that is enabled 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, no matter the location of your child's Chromebook.  Their ultimate mission is to help protect the emotional and physical safety of your child, via the monitoring of all students' email messages, as well as all content found in Google Drive.

Securly also helps keep students safe while using their school-issued devices.  Securly is a filtering service that is enabled 24/7 days per week, no matter the location of your child's Chromebook. A feature they provide is their parent portal, which will allow you to understand and participate in your child's online experience.  No more wondering what your children are accessing – you can see for yourself.

Starting the week of August 23, 2017, you will receive a weekly email from Securly.com that will show you a preview of your child's online activity.  If you prefer that we do not share your email address you provided, you can simply contact engage.parents@maranausd.org.  When looking for the Securly email, make sure you check your Spam or Junk folders to make sure the emails do not get caught in your filtering systems.

It is important to the Marana Unified School District to partner with parents to maintain a safe environment for students when using their Chromebook devices for educational purposes. More information will be coming soon regarding Parent University Classes that will be provided on how to set up a Parent Portal account.

If you have any further questions, please contact engage.parents@maranausd.org.

STUDENT AFTER SCHOOL PICK-UP

Parents, please always pick up your child in the front of the school after school.  There is always a lot of bus and general traffic by the gym area after school. We do not want students crossing the parking lots at that time.

TUTORING AND GOAL

Students who stay after school for tutoring must remain in the tutoring classroom until they are picked up by a parent/guardian or get on the activity bus.

Dads…we want you! We need dads to volunteer at Marana Middle. Please see the attached flier about this wonderful program and the upcoming LAUNCH event!

General Information:   The Marana Counseling Department is pleased to offer parents/guardians a monthly newsletter related to various topics surrounding the academic, social/emotional, and career development of students. 8th Grade Pre-algebra - S1: Scorpion Math - Thursday, August 24th

Hello Parents,

I wanted to let you know that your child’s homework is a bit different tonight. Today students had to perform test corrections on their formative that they took yesterday. Students are allowed to use their notes, the notes provided in google classroom, and video resources to help them with their corrections. I want all students to be able to show mastery on these ideas, and therefore we are going to have a retake tomorrow. Please make sure that your child is working on test corrections tonight and studying for tomorrow’s exponents retake. I would appreciate it if you could sign their test corrections informing me that they were reviewing their mistakes and preparing for tomorrow’s formative. If there are still questions, your child is welcome to come ask me during 1st hour tomorrow.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Banales

Physical Education: Parents........

We gave students an additional day to complete the reflection this week since it was the first time we have done one.  Grades have now been entered.  Here are some helpful hints in deciphering your students' grade:
1. The course policies grade is the online form you were supposed to complete for your student.  If you did it late, the score has not yet been entered.  All late ones will be entered after Friday which is the last day to complete these for credit.  Students who needed this assignment added to their google classroom were asked to send Mrs. Corner an email requesting that it be added.  The assignment has been added for every student who has requested it so far.
2. No score for the reflection means your student is on the Leadership Team.  They will begin adding scores in two weeks.
3. A 50/50 means your student was in class all week but did not complete a reflection.  A 10% deduction was assessed for each day missed.  This can be made up with the make-up options found in google classroom beginning Friday.  If your student did not do a reflection and does not have my class (CORNER) listed in their google classroom on their chrome book, please let me know.
4.  All other grades are pretty straight forward.  A 10% deduction was assessed for each day missed and can be made up with the make-up options found in google classroom beginning Friday.

The last day to complete the pre-test is Friday.  Please encourage your student to take care of this if they have not already done so.  We will do another reflection on Friday in the gym.  These are very simple to complete and students will have class time to do so.  In the event you would like to see one of these with your student, they will be loaded into google classroom Thursday evening so that you can sit down with your student and go through it together.  Reflections are generally made available Friday mornings through the end of the school day on Friday.
We hope you find this information helpful.  Have a wonderful evening, all, and thank you for your continued support!
