Holiday travelers, particularly women, often become constipated due to insufficient dietary fiber, dehydration, and nonroutine foods and schedules. But registered dietitian Suzanne Hensen, MS, RD, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham says it's easy to improve women travelers' digestive health. "First, prepare your body before the trip by increasing water intake, and also, slowly, your fiber intake. Then - since fast foods, hotel breakfasts, and rich vacation cuisine often don't provide enough dietary fiber - work in more fiber by packing quick snacks and breakfasts such as peanut butter sandwiches on whole-wheat bread, snack packs of melba toast, fiber-rich cereals, and homemade trail mix made with dry cereal, dried fruit and walnuts or almonds. "Plus, be sure to drink plenty of water to help maintain regularity," Hensen says. This article was prepared by Gastroenterology Week editors from staff and other reports.
