Principal's Message

Dear Families,

Typically, I use this place to tell you about the wonderful things that are going on in our school.  Today, in light of recent events, I would like to address concerns that continue to arise in our local community with the use of electronic smoking devices, (e-cigarettes, vapes).

In the past few months, e-cigarette users have been affected with a severe lung illness.  Over 350 cases have been reported, including 6 deaths. Both the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the American Medical Association (AMA) have issued warnings recommending that those who use e-cigarette devices refrain from using these devices while the investigation is ongoing. Patrice Harris, M.D., President of the American Medical Association says, "In light of increasing reports of e-cigarette-associated lung illnesses across the country, the AMA urges the public to avoid the use of e-cigarette products until health officials further investigate and understand the cause of these illnesses. The AMA recommends anyone who has recently used e-cigarette products to seek medical care promptly if they experience any adverse health effects, particularly coughing, shortness of breath or chest pain. The AMA also calls on physicians to make sure their patients are aware of the dangers of e-cigarettes, including toxins and carcinogens, and swiftly report any suspected cases of lung illness associated with e-cigarette use to their state or local health department."

National and school data show that, as a country, we have done a remarkable job convincing youth that smoking tobacco carries great risks and harm.  When polled, youth report that they look unfavorably upon the use of tobacco for themselves and for others.  These data do not however cross over to the use of electronic smoking devices.  Youth have seen these devices advertised as smoke cessation devices, and falsely believe that they are safe.  Recent studies have shown that at many as 1 in 5 teenagers have tried an e- cigarette.

Let's work together to protect our youth.  Let's enact the same prevention strategies we used for tobacco, to now protect our students from nicotine addiction, and from the unknown toxins in e-cigarettes.  Please take a moment this week to talk with your teen about the recent lung illnesses.  Discuss the addictive nature of nicotine and the control a substance can have over one's life.  Talk about the risks one takes by putting substances that have not been vetted as safe into their lungs.  We have built a positive herd mentality with respect to tobacco.  Teens don't use it, and their peers don't use it because their friends think it's foolish to do so.  Let's capture that thinking with respect to e-cigarettes and vaping.  If we work together, our students will not vape and they will convince each other not to vape, just as they convinced each other not to smoke.

We can do this!  Defend the Den!

To help with this conversation I have attached a discussion guide from the CDC, Talk with Your Teen About E-cigarettes.  I have also included a link to the CDC and their information on the Risks of E-cigarettes.

Office Hours for Mountain View are 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM

Students and Parents - The D-wing gate is open in the morning, please pull forward to drop off your student. Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus.

With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors.

Please do not park in the first 10 stops in front of the JTED building. Those are reserved for the preschool. Also, please do not make any U-turns in that area.

Parents:
Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office.
We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office.
Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass.

Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.

A Note from the Attendance Office

When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded.

"STUDENT ABSENCES"

In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444.

"STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS"

Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals.

College, Career, Counseling

MVHS Parents/Guardians and Students,

Parents/Guardians,

As Counselors and College and Career Advisors at Mountain View High School, we understand the expense of attending college (2 and 4 year), trade and specialty schools. One of the best ways to receive aid for these schools, is through the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). FAFSA provides student with access to grants (money that they don't have to pay back), work-study, and low interest loans. According to the National College Access Network, "90% of high school students who complete the FAFSA proceed directly to college, versus only 55% of students who don't complete the FAFSA."  Even if you believe you don't have a financial need that requires FAFSA completion, many scholarships require the student to have a completed FAFSA to qualify and for fund allocation.

In an effort to increase FAFSA completion and inform students about the importance of completion, students will have time during summit to request their FSA ID (students will need to know their Social Security number) which is needed to complete the FAFSA. In addition, the Counseling Department and College and Career Center will be teaching FAFSA lessons to our seniors through their English class on September 24th.

The College and Career Center will provide a FAFSA completion night on October 23rd, at 6pm in the Library. Parents and students need to bring their FSA ID's and 2018 tax return information.

If you have any questions in regards to the FAFSA, please do not hesitate to contact the College and Career Center at 520-579-4474 or your student's counselor at 520-579-4450.
