Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain View family,

I hope you had a great Labor Day holiday and some much needed rest. It is always a frenetic start to the school year and it seems that once we get through August we all start to settle in and become accustomed to our post-summer schedules.

This past week we hosted Tom Schimmer at Mountain View. We had all of the secondary teachers in our district in attendance as Tom spoke about Hope and Efficacy and the impact they both have on student achievement. He also stressed the need to have accurate measurements of student knowledge and our assessment and grading practices must be aligned to ensure that what we are reporting to our parents in a grade is truly a student's understanding of standards. Our staff at Mountain View then had meetings with their Professional Learning Communities and Mr. Schimmer. Those were powerful meetings and teachers were able to interact and seek professional guidance from Tom. Overall, a great day.

Josten's will be on campus tomorrow to meet with our Class of 2020. This is our second Senior meeting of the school year. We will continue to meet with the Senior class throughout the school year as they prepare for graduation on May 19th!

Josten's will return to campus to take graduation invitation orders on September 12th at lunch and again that evening.

We held our first fire drill last week. Although it was extremely hot on the field our students performed very well. We will continue to practice and monitor our safety drills throughout the year to help ensure our systems our both understood and in place. The safety of our students is extremely important. We also include Pima County Sheriff's office in our activities as their professional understanding is invaluable.

This year Mountain View students will participate in the High School Health and Wellness (HSHW) program survey from the Arizona Governor's Office of Youth, Faith and Family.  Students in grades 9-11 will take the survey during Summit on September 11. Please see the attached document for details or questions.

Have a great week and thank you.

Office Hours for Mountain View are 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM

Students and Parents - The D-wing gate is open in the morning, please pull forward to drop off your student. Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus.

With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors.

Please do not park in the first 10 stops in front of the JTED building. Those are reserved for the preschool. Also, please do not make any U-turns in that area.

Parents:
Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office.
We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office.
Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass.

Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.

A Note from the Attendance Office

When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded.

"STUDENT ABSENCES"

In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444.

"STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS"

Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals.

College, Career, Counseling

MVHS Parents/Guardians and Students,

As counselors at Mountain View High School, we understand the importance of a high school diploma and want all students to graduate and continue on to their post-high school plan. In an effort to help students better understand their graduation status, MVHS Counselors and the College and Career Center met with each of our senior students to discuss: important dates and deadlines, their credits, GPA, graduation requirements, and post-high school plan. Any student who was absent during last week's meeting will be called in and met with individually.

During this meeting, we talked with your student about their post high school plan and what it will take to graduate in May of 2020. Letters will be mailed home via USPS which will show your student's graduation status and post high school plan. In addition, your student also took a copy of this letter and a to-do list home with them.

To be on track to graduate, students must complete all 22 required credits, pass the civics test (students who have not passed/not tested will receive an invitation to test from Mr. Tidwell), and be trained in CPR (training will take place at MVHS).

If your student is off track for any reason, we met with them to determine a plan to get back on track.

If you have any questions in regards to your student's graduation status, please do not hesitate to contact your student's counselor at 520-579-4450.

PSAT

Parents of 10th and 11th grade students: Is your student planning on attending college after high school? Please have them sign up for the PSAT taking place this October. The PSAT is a preliminary test to prepare students for the SAT college entrance exam. Juniors should take the PSAT this year in order to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship.

The PSAT will be held here at MVHS on October 30th during the school day. Registration for the test is $25.00 and starts Tuesday, September 3rd. Students can sign up in the Bookstore bringing cash or check. When they register they will receive a study guide to help them prepare for the test and an information page with directions for them to sign up for the Remind so they can receive notifications regarding the test.
