Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain View family,

Gregory Cizek wrote that "The task of reforming educational assessment has just begun….The real challenge for assessment reform will be to bring assessment and grading practices into the fold." According to Z. Munzur, "The primary purpose of grades is to measure student achievement of learning in a particular curriculum." And, as Tom Schimmer shared with the Mountain View staff in August, "The time for grading reform is now. While the transition to standards-based practices may be challenging, it is essential for effective instruction and assessment."

As progress reports come out and students and parents look at grades, it is imperative that we keep a few things in mind.

First, as our grading philosophy has changed to reflect the Marana Unified School Districts Governing Board policies, we are providing grades on students achievement and mastery of standards. In the past students received grades for all types of activities, of which many were compliance-based, that did not measure standards. This alone will lead to more accurate grades. Second, teachers can provide more meaningful feedback on homework and classwork activities that are not graded with the hope and expectation that students will learn from the feedback provided and become better prepared for an assessment. This feedback, not the grade, is the best source of information for student growth and engagement.

Grades are seen by many as the final frontier. Grading practices have been unchanged for over 100 years and the research to support our former practices just does not exist. However, with our district focus on Equity for this school year, there could be no better time to tackle this issue and be leaders in this change movement. Accurate measures of student knowledge, validity in what we are reporting and equity in our practices will all ensure our students will be provided the greatest opportunity for success. We do know there will be bumps in the road and we have met with a few students regarding their grades and the adjustments they have had to make this year. We are confident that this is what is best for all students and also confident in the notion that students grades will, in the end, reflect their overall understanding of the standards in their classes at Mountain View.

As Matshona Dhliwayo said, "When you cannot move a mountain, it is only because you were meant to climb it." Our students will indeed climb mountains and they will change the world.

Have a great week and thank you.

Office Hours for Mountain View are 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM

Students and Parents - The D-wing gate is open in the morning, please pull forward to drop off your student. Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus.

With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors.

Please do not park in the first 10 stops in front of the JTED building. Those are reserved for the preschool. Also, please do not make any U-turns in that area.

Parents:
Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office.
We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office.
Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass.

Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.

A Note from the Attendance Office

When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded.

"STUDENT ABSENCES"

In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444.

"STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS"

Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals.

Board Members and Committee Chairs Needed!

With the turnover of "graduated" parents on our board, we are currently seeking to fill 3 out of 4 of our Board positions. MVHS PRO/Grad Night is a 501c3 organization and as such we are required to maintain an official board. If you're interested, please email Angela Chintis at mvgradnight@hotmail.com.

We are also currently seeking a Chairperson to head up the execution of Grad Night. This would entail organizing build days and overseeing decoration of the event. We currently have a great team you'd be working with and many details already taken care of. Please email Angela Chintis for more info: mvgradnight@hotmail.com
