The Marana Unified School District considers the safety and welfare of students and staff to be our highest priority. To that end, our school and District have a comprehensive Emergency Response Plan, aligned with state and national school safety protocols, which provides step-by-step guidelines for maximizing safety, efficiency, and communication.
In accordance with state guidelines, our school regularly plans and practices to ensure we are prepared for emergencies. Conducting safety drills is a crucial element in responsible, effective crisis preparation and ensures students and staff are aware of best processes. These drills also assist in continuously refining and improving our protocols and processes.
On September 23rd – September 26th (by class, during Summit), school administration in collaboration with Pima County Sheriff's Office, will present information to students related to student safety. This informational presentation will occur at an assembly and include the following safety topics:
- Fire Drill
- Shelter In Place
- Lockdown
- Active Shooter protocol
- Reporting Concerns: SpeakUp cyber tip line
The presentation will inform and educate students about best safety practices including what to expect if law enforcement officers arrive on campus. While discussing these topics is important to safety preparedness, we also recognize that the content may be difficult for some students. If at any time during the presentation, a student feels uncomfortable with a topic, the student may leave the presentation and go to the library for study time or to the counseling office to meet with one of our counselors.
Student attendance at this assembly is optional. If you prefer your student not attend, please contact me at 520.579.4427. Students not attending will have a quiet study time in the library.
You may view the Student Safety Presentation now at http://bit.ly/MUSDsafety. By providing the presentation to you in advance, you can talk with your student about the content and make an informed decision about whether or not to have your student attend the safety presentation. Additional information and a video regarding the new SpeakUp cyber tip line can be found at https://www.gaggle.net/resource/speakup-2/. If you have any additional questions, please contact our District Safety & Security Coordinator, Greg Roehm, at 520-682-1007.
Thank you for your continued partnership. Parents, staff, law enforcement, and community members all play an important role in safety. By continuing to work together, we make our schools and community a great place to be!
Sincerely,
Todd Garelick
