Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain Lion family,

We are in the home stretch of this quarter. Fall Break is just around the corner. It is amazing how the weather changes coincide with the break. What is more amazing is the amount of snowfall already in other parts of our country. The Farmer's Almanac calls for a cooler winter. We shall see.

A very important reminder for our seniors – the FAFSA opens October 1st. For more information please reach out to your child's counselor or Lori Wray in the College and Career Center. It is very important to complete the FAFSA early as the funds available will be dispersed and you want to make sure you are in the system early to receive some of the funding.

This week is Homecoming and Spirit Week. Please keep an a look out for important information regarding the special outfits each day. Also, on Friday, we will welcome our newest inductee into the Mountain View Hall of Fame. We are very excited to share this honoree with our community so please come to the game on Friday and watch the ceremony before kickoff.

The New Gym will officially open this week as well. Due to the heavy rains last fall and continuous damage from runoff, the floor had to be replaced. The project began in March and is finally completed. The floor is beautiful and we look forward to unveiling it on Friday for our student body.

Congratulations to the Pride of Mountain View. The band placed first place in their division in their first competition of the season at March the Mountain at Sabino High School. In addition to placing first place, they earned all captions. Congratulations to Ms. Taft, her staff and students. You make Mountain View proud!

Finally, as we are late in the first quarter, this is a very important time to access ParentVue. If you have any questions about grades please contact your child's teacher.

Have a great week and Happy Homecoming!

Parents:
Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office.
We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office.
Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass.

Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.

A Note from the Attendance Office

When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded.

"STUDENT ABSENCES"

In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444.

"STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS"

Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals.

College, Career, Counseling

MVHS Parents/Guardians and Students,

Parents/Guardians,

As Counselors and College and Career Advisors at Mountain View High School, we understand the expense of attending college (2 and 4 year), trade and specialty schools. One of the best ways to receive aid for these schools, is through the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). FAFSA provides student with access to grants (money that they don't have to pay back), work-study, and low interest loans. According to the National College Access Network, "90% of high school students who complete the FAFSA proceed directly to college, versus only 55% of students who don't complete the FAFSA."  Even if you believe you don't have a financial need that requires FAFSA completion, many scholarships require the student to have a completed FAFSA to qualify and for fund allocation.

In an effort to increase FAFSA completion and inform students about the importance of completion, students will have time during summit to request their FSA ID (students will need to know their Social Security number) which is needed to complete the FAFSA. In addition, the Counseling Department and College and Career Center will be teaching FAFSA lessons (what it is and importance of paying attention to detail when applying) to our seniors through their English class this Tuesday.

The College and Career Center will provide a FAFSA completion night on October 23rd, at 6pm in the Library. Parents and students need to bring their FSA ID's and 2018 tax return information.

If you have any questions in regards to the FAFSA, please do not hesitate to contact the College and Career Center at 520-579-4474 or your student's counselor at 520-579-4450.

Students who have registered for the PSAT:
We will be starting the pre-bubbling sessions to bubble your personal information in preparation for the test day on 10/30/19. These sessions will take place in the Library during Summit over the next few weeks. Please check the Google Classroom for your graduating class for the list of the scheduled Summits to find out what day you are scheduled to pre-bubble. If you have any questions you can come see Ms. Kati in the Counseling Office or email at B.J.Kati@maranausd.org

Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain Lion family,

We are closing in on the end of the quarter. Only a few weeks remain before we end our first grading period of the school year. We request that each of you take a few moments to look at ParentVue and discuss your child's grade in each of their classes. As I shared a few weeks ago, we hope that the conversation you have with your child is a little different this year than in previous years. Our hope is that you can ask questions that will provide deeper responses regarding what your child is learning, what they enjoy about the content, what challenges they face with the content and their strengths in each class.

That said, all of us with teenage children know that this conversation might not be easy to have and the most popular response might just be, "I don't know." Our hope is that, when provided prompts, they may open up and share more about their classes.

Next week is Homecoming. With that will come all of the festivities. Please encourage your child to dress for each of our spirit days and to help create a fabulous school spirit. These are special weeks that they will remember long after they graduate high school. With Homecoming we also get to celebrate with and honor our newest inductee into the Mountain View Hall of Fame. Watch next week for more information on this very special person that is most deserving of this recognition.

We also will be (finally) moving into our New Gym. It has been almost 7 months since we had to close the gym due to some flooding issues related to the August 22nd storm of last school year. We are extremely excited to finally be moving back in on October 4th and cannot wait to show off the facility. The construction project in our J/K wing is also nearing completion. The inside of J/K looks great and we also are eager for that project to conclude.

We hope you all of a great week and that we indeed get some of the rain that is forecast. Thanks for all you do to support Mountain View.
