Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain Lion family,

This week is our fourth week of school. I think we all feel like we just returned from summer vacation yet we will be looking at mid-term grades very shortly. If you have not already done so, please take a look at ParentVue and see how your child is performing in their classes.

As we have mentioned, too, at our parent meetings regarding the new grading philosophy, we want to change the conversation that parents are having with their students regarding school and grades. If you have a moment, instead of asking how your son or daughter is doing in a class, consider asking some of these questions:

  1. What are you learning in ________________________?
  2. What has been the most challenging part of that class?
  3. How can you explain this learning in words that I can understand?
  4. What are your strengths in this class?

By changing how we address these courses and the learning that is happening in the classroom we might get some incredible responses from our children. They may also look at you with a shocked look on their face – be ready but enjoy the conversation.

This Friday we are hosting Tom Schimmer at Mountain View. Tom is the author of the book Grading from the Inside Out. This is the book we read for our book study last spring and who we have been fortunate to see speak on a few occasions.

Tom's message regarding Hope and Optimism for our students resonates at Mountain View and his message about accurate grading truly establishes a foundation that we can all support.

Have a great Labor Day holiday and thank you for your support of Mountain View.

Office Hours for Mountain View are 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM

Students and Parents - The D-wing gate is open in the morning, please pull forward to drop off your student. Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus.

With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors.

Please do not park in the first 10 stops in front of the JTED building. Those are reserved for the preschool. Also, please do not make any U-turns in that area.

Parents:
Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office.
We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office.
Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass.

Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.

A Note from the Attendance Office

When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded.

"STUDENT ABSENCES"

In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444.

"STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS"

Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals.

College, Career, Counseling

MVHS Parents/Guardians and Students,

MVHS counselors and the College and Career Center, will be meeting with all of our senior students this week, to complete their senior advisement through their English classes. This will include a presentation from the College and Career Center on important dates/deadlines, scholarships, financial aid, etc. This advisement also includes a one-on-one meeting with their counselor, where we will discuss credits, post-high school plans, and graduation status. This information will be sent home with your student and be mailed home as well.

Last week we were able to meet with all of our 9th, 10th and 11th grade students to introduce/re-introduce ourselves and remind students of the services that the counseling office provides and how we can help them to be successful during their time here at MVHS and beyond.

We encourage all MVHS students to get to know their counselor as soon as possible. The more we know about them and their future plans or any concerns they may have, the better we can help. If your student would like to make an appointment with their counselor, please have them see Ms. Sims in counseling.
