Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain Lion family,

Today was a great start to the 2019-2020 school year. We loved seeing the smiling faces, new and very bright tennis shoes, students bustling around campus and the excitement in our teachers as they began teaching again.  The start of the school year brings so much – excitement, anxiety, nervousness, pressure, joy – our students run through a gamut of emotions and at the same time many feel safe as they have settled back into a familiar routine. This is a special time but we also want to remind everyone to pause and reflect on our own memories of returning to school and help our students with this transition.

We have a deepened focus on grades this year and ensuring that the grades our students receive demonstrate their knowledge of standards. We have moved away from compliant grading, such as a signed syllabus or notebook check, and are asking our teachers to collect accurate measurements of student knowledge. The validity in this process will ensure we have more accurate grades. We also have shifted our thinking regarding points and as we have shared in our parent meetings last week, we have a new baseline for grades. Our goal at Mountain View is to provide Hope and Optimism for our students while maintaining the constants of GPA's, Class Ranks, A-F grade reporting and grade bumps for Honors and AP courses. These constants are still the foundation of grading but the methods by which we assess our students are changing. As shared, if you would like to read the book we completed for our book study last Spring it is Grading from the Inside Out by Tom Schimmer.

On Monday, August 12th, Collin Kartchner will be in the Mountain View Auditorium. The event will begin at 7 p.m. Collin is on a crusade to help educate parents on the damage social media and 24/7 access to peer culture will have on their child's mental health. His goal is to help teens rise above social media comparison, negativity, cyber bullying, and the stress of being perfect. Every day Collin gets 100's of message from teens sharing how social media is hurting their mental health, and how his message changed or even saved their lives. Come hear this very important message.

Defend the Den. You may have seen the banners along Thornydale. Defend the Den. That is our new motto at Mountain View and this incorporates everything we believe in our PBIS message – We are Safe, We are Respectful, We are Responsible and Always Kind. Defend the Den encompasses all of this – we want our students to look out for each other, care about each other and at the same time, protect the school. Our entire community can come together and Defend the Den.

Thank you, welcome back and best of luck this school year.

Office Hours for Mountain View are 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM

Students and Parents - The D-wing gate is open in the morning, please pull forward to drop off your student. Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus.

With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors.

Please do not park in the first 10 stops in front of the JTED building. Those are reserved for the preschool. Also, please do not make any U-turns in that area.

Parents:
Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office.
We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office.
Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass.

Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.

A Note from the Attendance Office

When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded.

"STUDENT ABSENCES"

In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444.

"STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS"

Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals.

College, Career, Counseling

Dear Mountain Lion Parents/Guardians and Students,

Welcome back to the start of our 2019-2020 school year! In an effort to streamline the schedule change process, we wanted to send you some information to address common schedule change questions.

Schedule Change Process:

Requests will be taken during the first week of school. Please fill out the blue schedule change request form. The blue schedule change request form can be picked up in the Counseling office before/after school, during passing periods and at lunch. This form must be signed by the student and parent/guardian and returned to the counseling office no later than FRIDAY, August 09, 2019.
• Change of mind about an elective
• Level up or level down (move to or from an honors or AP class)
· Add/Drop additional class

Please understand that first semester schedule change requests will be addressed from August 2nd through August 9th, 2019 with the following considerations: priority will be given to requests turned in during Mountain Lion Days, by grade level, and then on a first-come first-served basis. Changes are contingent upon class balance and size, class availability, and administrative approval.

Students who have requested schedule changes:

Counselors are working diligently to get submitted requests for schedule changes processed.

If you have turned in a blue "request for schedule change" form, please continue to attend your current schedule which can be found in StudentVUE until otherwise notified.

If we are able to process your request, we will send your updated schedule to you during class. If we were not able to accommodate your request, you will receive a denial form with the reason(s) why during the first week of school.

Thank You,

Wrestling
Here is a shout out to the wrestling from Melissa Hall: I just wanted to give a much deserved shout out to the MVHS Wrestling Team for their help with  MUSD Health and Resource Fair over the weekend.  Coach Ponce recruited almost the entire team to help us set up and run this huge event.  We had several wrestlers help set up on Friday and another group show up on Saturday to help with running the event and clean up.  The physical work they put in was not easy and I can honestly say we could not have pulled of the event without them.  However, I think it is just as important to recognize their respectfulness, team work, and work ethic.  Everyone involved in coordinating the event commented on their positive attitudes and willingness to help.  You've got some amazing young men and women on your team and you should be very proud.  They represented MVHS and our district amazingly well.  Thank you to the Coach and the Team for helping us to execute a successful event! Please see the attached photos.
