Principal's Message

Good evening Mountain View family,

This is the last week of the first quarter. After this week we will already have completed one entire quarter of the school year.

That fact was reinforced last week as we had Joe Grossi from Jostens meet with our Senior class. In the darkness of the auditorium (we lost power but the show had to go on) Joe told the Seniors to avoid the sickness that seems to spring up on them – the dreaded Senioritis – and to stay focused on the prize awaiting them on May 21st. They are close…but still need to demonstrate grit to get to the finish line.

As Aristotle said about education, "The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet." That reminds me of the story I heard recently about grapes. When watered too much, the leaves of the vine will grow but the grapes will remain small. When the vines are challenged and faced with adversity – or in this case, given only what Mother Nature provides – the grapes grow and are of far greater quality. The idea is that we want to continue to challenge our students and see them face adversity as the result will be students more prepared for life after high school.

Another quote that explains this even better, "Education is the key to success in life, and teachers make a lasting impact in the lives of their students." - Solomon Ortiz

We value our teachers and the work they do as they incorporate the five commitments of our school district – Strong Relationships, Equity, Collaboration, Innovation and Deeper Learning.

I hope everyone enjoys a bit of rain and the rejuvenation we feel from the change in weather. Have a great week.

Don't forget, next week is Fall Break and school will be closed and there will not be a MLM. Have a great break!

Special Presentation – Teaching Fellows

Looking for a New Purpose? Career? Recently Retired? Marana Unified School District is looking for energetic people interested in becoming a teacher in our District. If you have a student-centered philosophy and want to inspire, motivate, and make a difference in students' lives, then this is the career for you!

Marana and the University of Arizona have partnered to create a unique opportunity, through the Teaching Fellows Program, to support you in reaching this goal!

Representatives from the University of Arizona and Marana Unified School District will discuss incentives for becoming a Marana Teaching Fellow on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at 5:30pm at Coyote Trail Elementary (Library), 8000 N Silverbell Tucson, AZ 85743.

RSVP to reserve your spot today at (520) 682-4745 (Pizza will be provided) or visit https://www.maranausd.org/teachingfellows to learn more about the program.

From the MVHS Front Office,

All students should have their student ID with them at all times. If your student needs one, they can get one in the Bookstore.

Office Hours for Mountain View are 7:00 AM to 3:45 PM

Students and Parents - The D-wing gate is now open in the morning, please pull forward to drop off your student. Students without a Zero Hour will be allowed on campus at 8:00 AM. Students arriving late after last bell will need to go to the front office to enter campus.

With our increased security measures, students being picked up early need to enter the office near the library rather than the back office doors.

Please do not park in the first 10 stops in front of the JTED building. Those are reserved for the preschool. Also, please do not make any U-turns in that area.

Parents:
Just a friendly reminder that any ill student that needs to go home must report to the health office before calling a parent. They can call their parent from the office.
We will not send passes up if parent arrives before the student reports to the health office.
Student may ask their teacher for a health office pass.

Parents, if your child is ill and you call them out as such, please keep them home. This will keep the germs from spreading.

Chromebook Insurance

There is still time to purchase Chromebook Insurance. If interested, please contact Mrs. Ketchum in the Bookstore to purchase insurance. The cost is $30.00. Chromebook Insurance covers accidental damage to the device for the initial occurrence.  Insurance does not, however, cover the replacement of a device charger.  Insurance is not required, but it can provide peace of mind.

A Note from the Attendance Office

When a student's absence or late arrival may be excused, the parent/guardian should communicate with the Attendance Office so that the absence or late arrival will be appropriately recorded.

"STUDENT ABSENCES"

In order to request that an absence be excused, the parent/guardian must call and leave a message on the Attendance Line within 24 hours of the absence. The Attendance Line voicemail is available 24/7 at 520-579-4444. If a "request to excuse" message is not received, the attendance clerks will attempt to contact the parent/guardian so they may properly record the student's absence(s). If no response is received from the parent/guardian the absence(s) will be recorded as unexcused.

"STUDENT LATE ARRIVALS"

Unless excused, a student's late arrival(s) are recorded as "Unexcused Tardy/Late". If a parent/guardian would like to request that the late arrival(s) be excused, the parent/guardian must either come into the school with the student and provide the late excuse to the Front Office staff, or call the Attendance Line voicemail at 520-579-4444 and leave a "request to excuse" message for the late arrival. Please note: the Attendance Office does not contact parents/guardians regarding late arrivals.
