Important COVID Information

October 27, 2020

Hello,

The health and well-being of our staff and students is a top priority. I would like to take this opportunity to share newly identified health information.

We have three confirmed COVID-19 cases at Mountain View High School. Over the weekend, two cases were identified in students and a third case in a student was confirmed today, 10/27/20. The student in the third case had not been on campus while contagious. Contact tracing was completed and those students and staff members who were exposed have been notified and are taking appropriate measures.

We are choosing to send this notification to inform you whenever there is a confirmed positive case in the school in an effort to keep our families and staff informed. Exposure is defined as being within six feet of the sick person for more than 15 minutes while the person was infectious beginning 48 hours prior to symptom onset or the test date if asymptomatic. Regardless of the outcome of the exposure, any individual who was exposed will be asked to quarantine for at least 14 days.

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness that is spread through coughing, sneezing, and contact with nasal secretions, mucus or saliva from the mouth or throat of an infected person. Signs and symptoms of COVID-19 may include:

     Fever, chills

     Coughing

Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

New loss of taste or smell

Other symptoms: body aches, sore throat, headache, diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, and runny nose

Both children and adults can get COVID-19, and some people are at higher risk for getting seriously ill. For the safety of your family and the community, it is critical for you to take actions to reduce your risk of getting sick with COVID-19.  I would like to remind you it is important to follow all public health recommendations to reduce the risk of illness. These include:

·     Wearing a mask properly at all times

·     Washing your hands frequently with soap and water

·     Avoid touching your face

·     Maintaining social distance when possible

MUSD continues to follow the public health safety guidelines set forth by the CDC and the Pima County Health Department. Our schools practice enhanced cleaning and disinfecting, social distancing, hand washing, limiting visitors to campus and the requirement of a face covering. We are taking the necessary steps to protect the health of students and staff, which is our number one priority. Per our established protocol, the impacted areas have been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. You may refer to our District mitigation plan or individual school plans for more detailed guidelines and procedures.

If you have further questions about this notice, please contact Mountain View High School Health Services at 520-579-4400.

Sincerely,

Todd Garelick

Good evening Mountain View families,

We are back for our second week of hybrid instruction. As I shared last Monday, it was great having students on campus last week. With our school returning in the hybrid instructional model, we were better able to see our mitigation plan in practice and identify any issues or concerns with smaller groups. This transition to hybrid also allowed our teachers to work with smaller groups in-person and work through some of the challenges that come with teaching synchronously. We do appreciate your patience as our teachers were not trained in this teaching style but did an amazing job last week – our first week in seven months of in-person learning.

Each week we will encounter more challenges as well. The letter I shared Friday, along with the voicemail that you received, detailed one of the challenges we faced late in the week. We are working very hard to keep you informed and maintain clear and open communication.

Have a great week and enjoy the changing temperatures. We all earned the right to enjoy this as we made it through one of the hottest (and most dry) summers on record.

College, Career, Counseling

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As we transition to In-Person Hybrid Learning, the Counseling/College and Career Center (CCC) wanted to share our Safe Return Policies and Procedures.

In order to best support your student's learning and safety, we believe that limiting non-emergency in-person visits to the Counseling Office is required. Emergency/Crisis situations will be seen immediately in person.

Emergency Situations (Seen Immediately)

  • Student in emergency/crisis situations or dealing with anything that is making class impossible to attend will be seen in-person immediately
  • Remote students in emergency/crisis situations, should call 520-579-4450 during school hours
  • Life-threatening situations please call 911

We are here to support your student(s) and we will have many opportunities for zoom or phone call appointments during non-instructional time or after school hours (1:55-3:00). Students can make these appointments by using the appointment links shared in their "Class of" Google Classroom.

Non-Emergency Situations (virtual appointments)

  • Questions about courses and credit
  • Graduation planning
  • College/career planning

College Career Center:

  • Students should email Ms. Wray with questions in regards to Financial Aid, Scholarships, FAFSA, or College and Career Planning
  • Students are encouraged to make Zoom or phone appointments
  • As the CCC is in a separate and isolated building, students may schedule an in-person appointment with Ms. Wray
    • Must have teacher permission, and are encouraged to have meetings during non-instructional time

We believe that this policy will provide mitigation for students and staff during this period and ultimately provide a safe environment for all. We will continue to monitor and adjust this policy as we continue in Hybrid Learning and beyond.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at (520)-579-4450.

Good evening Mountain View family,

This was a very special day at Mountain View. For the first time since March, we were able to welcome our students back to campus. It felt great seeing our students walking around campus, talking to each other, learning in front of our teachers and getting back to normal. We want to commend the students for following the mitigation plan and working with our staff to ensure that our safety protocol measures were being followed. I especially want to recognize our incredible teachers as well. Today was a huge challenge for them and they did an incredible job. As one said earlier this morning, they felt like they were performing a juggling act – some kids in the classroom and many kids on a Zoom – but they performed admirably.

One thing students may find different when they return is that the District is allowing teachers to bring their own child(ren) to their classroom on days when their child(ren) are scheduled to be remote learners. This was an accommodation that was examined extensively. As we are committed to balancing the needs of families in the District, we are equally committed to the needs of MUSD teachers in their role as parents.  Making this accommodation for our teachers will minimize their need to take personal time for their own childcare needs.

We will continue to work through the challenges presented to our teachers, staff, students and parents but I do know that we can do this successfully if we work together. Have a great week and keep Mountain View in your thoughts.

The College and Career Center is open and ready to help you and your students plan for post high school.
