Welcome back from Mr. Goldstein

Hello Families and Students,

I’d like to be one of many to welcome you back to school.  This year will be unique. There will be several challenges we will tackle together, but in the end, we will end up with a greater knowledge of the world events that have shaped society.  I want to ensure everyone that your teachers and principals have worked hard to make this year valuable.  We are excited to execute a lot of exciting new ways of teaching online, that have been developed over the last months.  We collaborate a lot, because we know these are incredibly important times for you--they are for us as well.  We have a great staff at Mountain View that is very enthusiastic to start the school year off running.  One element of teaching social studies, I have always enjoyed, is our unique opportunity to analyze history, and compare it with the events we experience on a daily basis.  I have a feeling this year will give us unique opportunities to engage in these discussions.

I look forward to meeting all of you soon, and learning about who each of you are.  Google Classroom will be our primary tool.  I will paste the google classroom code at the end of this letter.  Try to enter the classroom before September 5th, and let me know if you experience any difficulties.   Here’s a link to a great Google Classroom tutorial that can show some of the features for both parents and students.   I will be posting our Zoom login information on Google Classroom as well so students can meet up at our first online meetings.

I look forward to a great beginning.

Sincerely,

Mr. Goldstein

July 31 Letter from MUSD Superintendent

MUSD Letterhead

July 31, 2020

Dear MUSD Parent and Guardian:

Good afternoon. I hope this letter finds you and your family healthy and well. This past week has been a busy and exciting time in the District as we welcomed our teachers back. Senior Leadership, Principals, and I are meeting virtually with over 700 teachers as we engage in additional planning efforts and continued professional development for a successful school year. We have an exceptional team! I am confident that our Remote Learning/Distance Learning plan, aligned to the Arizona Department of Education standards, is truly second to none and your student is going to have a positive learning experience this year.

As we prepare to start remote learning on August 5, I wanted to take this opportunity to share some of the action and work taking place as we look ahead when we are safely permitted to return to in-person, classroom learning. MUSD is working closely with several community partners including the Pima County Health Department, MHC Healthcare, and the Arizona Department of Education. In addition to our work with these partners, we are aligning our in-person guidelines and safety processes with the Governor's Open for Learning Executive Order, Arizona Department of Health Services benchmarks, and the guidance issued by the CDC (revised last week). Additionally, early next week you will be receiving a MUSD Parent/Student Resource Guide to assist you during our Remote Learning period.

Governor Executive Order 2020-51 Arizona: Open for Learning
As I shared with you last week, the Governor's Executive Order states that schools are not required to return to in-person, teacher-led, classroom instruction on a specific date. Rather, school districts are to consider the Arizona Department of Health Services public health benchmark recommendations released by August 7, guidance from county health officials, community needs, and available resources to determine when in-person instruction can safely be made available for all students. Also aligned with the Governor's Executive Order, the District is working to establish a reasonable protocol for providing on-site support services to each of our highest need student populations beginning August 17.

Pima County COVID-19 Back to School Process
On Tuesday, July 21, Pima County released some specific recommendations related to the reopening of schools. Specifically, they stated that they do not support the reopening of schools on August 17 for traditional face-to-face, in-person learning. This is based on current local County COVID-19 infections being at the highest daily amounts since the pandemic began. Countywide transmission rates remain above 11 percent, with a World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation that rates be below 5 percent prior to opening. For these and many other reasons, it is their professional opinion that the earliest that traditional in-person instruction can be anticipated to resume is after Labor Day (September 7, 2020) or later (e.g. October 5, 2020). We will continue to work closely with the Pima County Health Department as we wait for the additional public health benchmarks to be released from the Arizona Department of Health Service.

Where do we go from here
The Pima County COVID-19 Progress Report and Local Recommendations, coupled with guidance from the Arizona Department of Health Services public health benchmarks, will be critical tools in determining when in-person, classroom learning can resume in MUSD. In addition to these benchmarks, the District will follow the guidance issued by the CDC (revised again last week) as well as the State in our development of appropriate in-person guidelines and safety processes.

As we continue our work in these areas, we are also in the process of developing specific protocols with MHC Healthcare such as the steps the District would take in the event of a positive COVID test, communications, contact tracing and additional appropriate safety measures. We are also working with experts in developing site specific school campus safety plans to include circulation flows for social distancing, classroom layouts, touch points, high traffic areas, best place for hand sanitizer stations, and more.

Please know that I will continue to keep you informed as we move forward. I encourage you to continue to check your emails for detailed communications from your student's teacher and school related to instruction, daily schedules, grades, attendance, and additional academic and social emotional support resources and services.

Thank you for your trust in the District. Every employee in this District is dedicated to your student and family and passionate about making a difference in the lives of our students. Stay healthy and we look forward to welcoming your student on August 5.

Sincerely,

Dan Streeter, Ed.D.

Conceptual Physics

Physics students and guardians-

I am so excited for the opportunity to teach Physics this year.  For those that do not know me, my name is Amanda Forte.  This will be my fourth year teaching science at Mountain View High School.  I have taught Bio/Biomedical and Forensic Science in the past, which means that some of my prospective Physics students might have had me once or twice before.  From looking at my class rosters, I am very excited to have old students back and to meet new students.

The google classroom code for Conceptual Physics for first period is:  nugjle7

Please have your student log into google classroom before August 5th to receive announcements and assignments, including zoom links as well.  I am really looking forward to getting to know your student and study the physics together this year.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Amanda Forte

I will meet with your student on Wednesday, August 5th at 9am on zoom:

Hello from Ms. Almeida!

Happy Thursday Mountain Lion Parents and Guardians!

I’m Alex Almeida, and I’m very excited to be your child’s English teacher for the 2020-2021 school year at Mountain View. This will be my 8th year teaching high school English and my 4th year at Mountain View. While the first day of school this year will look different, I look forward to meeting all of my classes next week and connecting with everyone.

I know many of you are concerned and worried about what this school year will look like. For many families and teachers, the spring semester wasn’t a successful one. These are still uncertain times, and I hope to be able to provide some sense of stability and consistency for both you and your student. No matter what the setting is, school and education should not be about completing a checklist of assignments. My vision for this school year involves engagement, real-world connections, student voice, and parent feedback.

In order to best help me understand your needs, I created the survey linked below for you to fill out at your convenience. I also created a class website that will be updated throughout the year to help you best access resources and see what we’ll be doing in class every day. Please note that this is a work in progress! It may not look like much now, but I promise it will be complete by the first day of school as I continue to upload links and resources. Below you can also find the Google Classroom code that students will need in order to join my class. Once they do that, you can add yourself as a parent to their account in order to keep up with their progress in class.

My main request to you this year is that you never hesitate to reach out to me, and that you encourage your student to do the same. Whether it’s to ask clarifying questions throughout the year or just to reach out and introduce yourself, I look forward to hearing from all of you!

Thank you so much for your time. I know you are receiving many emails this week about the upcoming school year. As your child’s English teacher, I have no doubt that this email is probably longer than it needed to be. I can’t wait to begin working with you to make this year a success for everyone.

Have a fantastic day!

July 24 Letter from MUSD Superintendent: Start of School Year

MUSD Letterhead

Friday, July 24, 2020

Dear MUSD Parent and Guardian:

This is always an exciting time of year as we prepare for the start of the school year. I know that I have been looking forward to the return of our students and the opportunity to begin building relationships with our families. While starting the school year through remote learning is not what I had envisioned, I am excited for our students to begin learning and connecting with their classmates and teachers.

I know there may be some confusion regarding the Arizona: Open for Learning Plan that came out yesterday afternoon from Governor Doug Ducey and Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman. If you are like me, you are walking away from these press conferences with more questions than answers these days.

Yesterday's announcement does not change the start of our school year. MUSD will begin the school year on Wednesday, August 5 delivering thoughtful and rigorous Remote Learning and Distance Learning models. We will continue these learning models until the District can safely return to in-person classroom instruction. I am incredibly proud of the collaborative work, which continues to occur in order to provide a high-quality learning experience. Our educators, staff, and administrators are eager to begin teaching and learning with your student.

The big announcement that came from this newest Executive Order yesterday is the replacement of the August 17 date for in-person instruction with the release of "public health benchmarks" for the safe return of in-person, teacher-led classroom instruction. The Governor announced that these benchmarks will be made available to school districts no later than August 7. The Order states that school districts are to consider these benchmark recommendations, guidance from county health officials, community needs, and available resources to then determine when in-person instruction can safely be made available for all students. Additionally, the Order states that school districts are to provide some on-site support beginning August 17, which we are also working to finalize those details.

Please know that we are continuing to work closely with Pima County health officials and our different stakeholder groups in our planning efforts to determine when the District can safely return to in-person instruction. I will continue to keep you updated and thank you again for your support and understanding as we navigate this constantly changing situation.

As we count down to August 5, please check your email for ongoing communications from your student's school regarding Chromebook and course materials distribution, teacher assignments/classroom placements, student schedules, virtual back to school events, and more. We plan to begin a great year making connections with students and providing supportive and engaging academic experiences.

Thank you for your support and partnership. These past months have proven that we will get through these unprecedented times together. Please take care of your student, your family, and yourself.

Sincerely,

Dan Streeter, Ed.D.

Attention Families of 9th Graders and New Students

Dear Families of New Students and Freshmen,

Every year we host welcome events to introduce new students and their families to our school. Through these events, we ease the anxieties and worries of the first day at a new school.  Given the current restrictions for onsite events, we are unable at this time to deliver an in person welcome. We do not, however,  want to miss the opportunity to greet and welcome new students, so we plan to welcome them remotely through a Welcome Session.

During the Welcome Session, students will learn a bit about our school and its programs, and learn some of the functionings of our systems that are relevant to our remote start of school. Students will also have an opportunity to ask questions about Mountain View, and about how school is beginning this year.  Although we may not have every answer right away, student questions always drive our thinking.

To participate in our Welcome Session, please visit this SignUp Genius to select a time slot: Welcome Session Registration. Please complete the required information to register your student.  Prior to the scheduled Welcome Session, your student will receive an email from their Welcome Teacher with an invite to a Zoom meeting for the Welcome Session.  Sessions will be held on July 27 and 28.  The session will last approximately an hour. To participate in the Zoom Welcome Session a student must have access to a device that has both video and audio capabilities.  A Zoom account is not required. Registration closes before midnight on Thursday, July 23.  At this time, seats are limited.

We recognize that a virtual welcome does not replace the effectiveness and value of an in person event.  Once in person instruction is permitted, it is our plan to host an in person orientation. Right now, we want new students to feel welcomed into our school culture and our virtual classrooms.  When we return we will welcome them home to the physical structures of our Den.

Sincerely,

Robin Meece

Associate Principal

Good evening Mountain View family,

We are closing in on the first day of the new school year. We are very excited to get back to our school routine and welcome our students back. We all understand it will look different but our teachers have been working very hard to plan their classrooms and will do the everything they can to create the best learning environment possible for our students.

Lon Watters said, "School is a building which has four walls with tomorrow inside." Though we will be away from our school building, we will be in school and our virtual learning will be engaging for our students. As we said last year as we transitioned into our new grading philosophy at Mountain View, we will be engaging our students through meaningful measurements of knowledge and providing hope and optimism through validity in our assessments. That same philosophy holds true for this coming school year. We are on a new journey but we will embark on this together and together we will get through this.

Attention Families of New Students and Freshmen

Every year we host two welcome events to introduce students and families to our school. Through our freshman transition camp, Elevate and our new student orientation event we ease the anxieties and worries of the first day at a new school.  Given the current restrictions for onsite events, we are unable at this time to deliver an in person welcome.  We do not, however,  want to miss the opportunity to greet and welcome new students, so we plan to welcome them remotely through a Welcome Session.

During the Welcome Session, students will be introduced to school administration, learn a bit about our school and its programs, and learn some of the functionings of our systems that are relevant to our remote start of school. Students will also have an opportunity to ask questions about Mountain View, and about how school is beginning this year.  Although we may not have every answer right away, student questions always drive our thinking.

This week an email will be sent to all Mountain View families.  The email will contain a link to a SignUp Genius form.  Please complete the required information to register your student.  Shortly after registering, your student will receive an email from their Welcome Teacher with an invite to a Zoom meeting for the Welcome Session.  Sessions will be held on July 27 and 28.  The session will last approximately an hour.

Keep an eye out for this week's email.
